For the first session of IT Elective 4160, more commonly known as Business Intelligence, we tackled an introduction to the course and the various ways we could handle data. In this post, I will be going over the lessons I learned from these two topics. This mainly functioned as a refresher for me as I am a curious Computer Science student. However, I hope that other people will learn something from this post.
Introduction to Business Intelligence
The topic of Business Intelligence is simply applied statistics. During our first meeting with the entire class, it was made clear to us that it is simply statistics applied to businesses in order to gain a better understanding of the numbers and charts in projections and such. The closest field I could relate it would be Big Data because it involved creating meaning from the immeasurable wealth of information from many different sources nowadays.
Data Handling
Data handling is one of the fundamentals that every person needs when working with information. They need to know how to select, filter, and sort data before they are able to effectively use formulas and aggregate data. There is a lot of information around us everyday that comes in different mediums such as our senses, social media, and the internet. Learning how to handle this data is essential if you want to start leveraging this amount of information since most information around the world can be stored using the most basic of tools like MS Excel and Google Sheets. In more technical cases, people use databases like MySQL and NoSQL which function in a similar manner to how we use other tools.
