In one sententce, Hiver @savvyplayer is offering free web hosting and it seems pretty good. Here's the initial post: @savvyplayer/free-website-hosting-for-d
The specs and what is being offered are listed in the post above. I've not tested everything, but what is being given seems pretty robust.
"Free" web host drama
I've used several free web hosts over the years. More than one has simply disappeared, along with whatever files I had on there. Then, all the links embedded in other places are now defunct as well. I get that me paying zero means I shouldn't complain and that the only words out of my mouth should be, "Thank you." Still, it would be nice to get a "Hey, might want to get your files downloaded quick-like" notice.
On a few occasions, I've wanted a one page host to simply put an html file on the internet...a post-one-html-page site. @forykw mentioned such a site in his write-up about Hive-Pay, called https://htmlsave.com. It seemed like what I occasionally could use, but I discovered that it self-deletes after a couple of hours. It's good for testing or for a two hour web page. Maybe there are other such free one page hosts out there, but I've yet to find them.
Anyway, @savvyplayer is giving away real hosting
I set up https://crrdlx.websavvy.work using savvy's hosting service. Yes, my site is currently very minimal. But, hey, I wanted a place to stick some stuff, and there it is! And, no, I haven't tried out everything offered in the hosting. But, I'll say this:
- @savvyplayer has been very helpful and responsive in answering questions. That's something you don't get from some free hosts off the 'net.
- You get https (not just http). In my experience, this is very unusual for a free host.
- The hosting seems to offer pretty much anything a normal user might need: html/css/javascript naturally, but also python, php, perl/cgi (I guess, haven't tried yet), mysql for heavier load users.
- I'm interested in having one or two domain names that I own forward to subdirectories. Though I haven't had time to work this through, savvy says it's a doable thing.
- cPanel is great (below). I'd used it years before and was so-so on it's usability. It seems rather user-friendly now. It's also possible to get into the command line/terminal, if that's something you wish to do.
If you're interested
If you're interested in some free hosting, the thing to do would be to reach out to @savvyplayer and say, "Hi." Either leave a comment in the post @savvyplayer/free-website-hosting-for-d (and likely include an @savvyplayer so it'll be noticed) or reach out in any other Hive manner.
