I know many people here are familiar with Neal Stephenson, the sci-fi writer. I know this because his name and books have popped up often here, which is why I started reading "Snow Crash" recently. I typically, like never, read sci-fi but I'm enjoying the book. For anyone UNfamiliar with his work, the thing that amazes me most in that this book came out in 1992. He was so far ahead and correct on so many things:
. the "metaverse" (evidently he's credited with coining the term, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metaverse)
. the idea of people "living" there as avatars
. the items in the metaverse which are essentially NFTs
. digital money, some people actually theorized he's Satoshi Nakamoto: https://reason.com/2019/06/05/if-we-told-you-neal-stephenson-invented-bitcoin-would-you-be-surprised/
. and there are more little things I can't recall right now
Here in 2025 it's easy to gloss over these things as ho-hum everyday, but then I recall, "This was 1992 when it was written, there was no world wide web then for regular people to do stuff." Impressive foresight.
