Several years ago, I met an older lady whose husband had passed away. Shortly after his estate had settled, a vendor notified her of over 100K in unclaimed property for a "small" fee. She was surprised - he had property she didn't know about?
Indeed, he had a decades-old stock portfolio he forgot about. The company sold it after his death, netting over 100K. Because no one claimed that, the state had custody of it. She quickly signed the contract to retain this vendor. A few months later, she obtained the funds from the state minus the vendor's 30% recovery fee!
Morale of the story: don't be this lady. Claiming property from the state is FREE though not fast or efficient. If you know of any one who has passed, it is worth checking whether the state is holding onto any of their property or whether you're entitled to it.
Clark County, Las Vegas, NV is holding ~$670 million. If no one claims the property, it goes to the state. Be vigilante, check because you may be rich.
