I have the joy and pleasure to be introduced into steemit by Charles @focusnow. My name is okechukwu Nworu, I came from a large family having been raised in the suburb of a notable city called Aba, Abia state, Nigeria.
My modest upbringing - and Primary School Education!
During my early childhood days, I can still recollect that it was not too Rosy because of my parents meager income. This inefficiency necessitated my doing virtually everything in the rural area. My primary school building was one of those ancient structures constructed by the colonial masters with its special wooden architecture. The windows were' rarely closed as Shout's of frogs in the nearby bush heralded our daily opening devotions during the rainy seasons.
My house to the school was about 2 kilometers and I had to trek with my elder and younger siblings to and from the school a times under the scorching sun bare footed..wearing sandals in those days is likened to seeing a white man whom to our minds then was like seeing an Angel from heaven. I had to carry my slate on my head and my counting stick for arithmetics. This was after I had gone to a nearby stream with my sizeable calabash to vetch water .my joy in the primary school came to a climax on the day I passed out with a good result.. In commendation, our headmaster then Mr onungwa, instructed that 3 stools should be kept in front and me and two others who came first, second and third were carried on top of those stools by teachers and the whole pupils and teachers clapped their hands unstoppable for us in commendation of our academic gallantry. I raised my shoulders high and on getting home, , my parents whose Joy knew no bounds prepared a good egusi soup and garnished my plate a chicken s head which was a sign of appreciation in those days.
My experiences at High (Secondary) School.
My journey to secondary school was not so different as some of the entrance exams we took began to come out. The schools in town like All Saint secondary and Wilcox memorial college were the first results to be released. Though I met their requirements for entry, but I was denied because of sponsorship.. My parents can't afford the transportation to and from school so I had to resort to a nearby secondary school in ndiakata, Abia State. Though that deprivation did not deter me as I was so excited at least, I am going to be wearing plastic sandals to school for the first time with a new dress and to be addressed with a new nomenclature " college " student.. Our principal Mr enemanna was a polished and seasoned administration. In the morning, he will wear his plain straight trousers blending it with a light blue shirt properly tucked in and his accent for the English language was unavoidable interesting.... He was fond of correcting us and encouraged every student to pronounce English language phonetically. Words like, come, necessary, important, category etc were powerfully. Those of us who we're day students were always jealous of the boarding students as they filled our ears everyday in the classroom with boarding activities.
It is good to remark in those days that there was no sorting by students to pass their papers as against what you have nowadays when students hire people to write their exams for them.my favorite teacher Mr uzoma was an English teacher who also had the privilege of being taught by the colonial masters. His command of English language just like our principal was quite unbeatable and other teachers envied him. We had a good football , handball and basketball pitches though I was only interested in handball.
During holidays, I will travel to my aunty who was living at Port Harcourt road in Aba then.ln her house she will engage me by mandating me to hawk groundnut for the two or three weeks I will stay with her and while going she will use the process to buy books, like " Eze goes to school, oliver twist, and things fall apart".
Post High School and the realities of Life
At the end of my secondary school, the result came and I was successful. But couldn't contain because of sponsor. As I look through my testimonial where the principal acknowledge " this student is bright and should be encouraged to study further " .....I fed bad knowing that my dream may not come true. I had to engaged in apprenticeship with a book merchant. I spent quiet a number of years with him so I could learn how to merchandize books and possibly make a little savings to assist me further my education.. Because of my flare for reading, it always caused a rift between me and my boss as he comes to see me reading each time he breezes in.however, I live raged from him and opened bookstore and entered the polytechnic the same year...as it stands now, I have graduated, and also written 3 books ...one of the books is titled " how to get to your dream land published in 2014 has sold about 800 copies.
