Hi there. How are you doing? Let me take you to a journey of my life living in a simplicity.
Let me start in a quote that once I read, “Life is beautiful, so enjoy every piece of it”. This quote stuck in my head that it’s about enjoying every moment – its living with joy even tribulations that comes along your way.
My name is Femelyn Comising Angayon, but you can call me “Fe”. I grew up in a family of eleven. Yes, we are all eleven including my parents. I have 4 brothers, and 4 sisters. It’s a big family!
Growing up, I witnessed the hardship my parents faced raising nine children from where to acquire food, clothing, and money. I didn’t experience luxury when I was little neither my siblings. I can vividly remember what we ate before – sweet potato for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Rice is rarely served because my parents need money to save for this. But then, it’s not a problem for me because I enjoyed simple living. The life before being a kid was all about fun – I don’t think about worries or problems. What I wanted is to play with my friends where everything seemed new and exciting. I can remember the time when we swam to the river with my classmates, carefree, and happy. Back then, we don’t feel shame nor insecurity.
Years passed by, it’s the same feeling but there were changes the way I approach things especially when I started school. My parents couldn’t afford new clothing wherein some were old, and some torn or worn-out. But these things didn’t hinder me going to school. My routine was school and home. I don’t hang with my friends during weekend. My siblings and I helped our parents at the garden. Even under the scorching heat, we were there pulling weeds, and plant vegetables. I learned how to plant variety of crops – something that I don’t ashamed of, I’m proud where I came from. Sometimes, during weekends or vacation, we did what we call “Puldiya” – it’s local term for doing manual labor in someone’s else garden. The money I earned from manual labor, I used it for my allowance in school.
In Highschool, I still did manual labor, but I also began serving food at a local restaurant in the town where I studied because the money my parents gave me wasn’t enough to supply my needs in a week and I need to budget for me to have food to eat. That part of my life, I came to realized that I need to finish my studies no matter what happen – this taught me to be grateful of what I have, to be resilient, and to have the perseverance. My journey before I was highschooler was very tough, and rough. Despite all of it, I found solace and comfort because of my friends, teachers, and parents who were supportive giving me pieces of advice. I wouldn’t deny the fact that I felt insecurities with my classmates who had something in the table. But in the part of me, I’m proud of myself for the reason of I earned some of my allowances not only depending in my parents’ penny.
When I reached college, little by little, our life wasn’t as hard as it used to be. We could finally eat of what we craved. But still my parents work as a laborer. For now, by God’s grace, I finished my Bachelor’s Degree in Education specializing in Home Economics, and luckily, I passed my Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). Three of my brothers didn’t push through their studies due to financial constraints that led them to drop. And I have three siblings who are still studying – one in a university, and two in secondary school.
Looking back, life has taught me the essence of contentment - it’s not always about grand gestures or having affluent life, though I’m always dreaming living in a cozy house someday. I know one day, I’ll get there. For now, I’m continuing to grow and learn the field that I’ve chosen. What I can say is this: always believe in your capabilities, no matter what life throws at you, always stand tall because one day tables will turn.
