Special satellite Shiosaki plummets through Earth’s atmosphere, straight towards the town of Mabase. Sirens sound as the state of emergency and evacuation are broadcast over loudspeakers, but all too late for anybody to escape in time. As everyone braces for their imminent destruction, a young man, Naota, stands alone atop a factory with nothing but guitar in hand. Blaring in the background, The Pillow’s “Crazy Sunshine” reaches the climax of its guitar solo as Naota turmoils about what he can do against such impossible odds.
But I digress.
Following in my team’s footsteps, I wanted to pop in and introduce myself as another member of Future Precedent. So, hello world! My name’s Matt, and I’m in love with the future. Back when the N64 was released, I fantasized that one day we’d have a portable equivalent. To my younger self, the future arrived in 2011 with the 3DS, and has continued rapidly advancing since. Currently, outside of my Future Precedent dreams focused on societal progression, I’m really hoping that VR/AR/MR technology takes off (not to say that it can’t benefit society, but to be honest, I’m selfishly interested in it for my own entertainment). Now that media has progressed enough that engrossing storytelling is frequently achieved, I figure the next level of engagement would be full immersion experiences.
For those unfamiliar with it, my intro was from FLCL, a coming-of-age story that’s become one of my favorite short series of all time. It’s a polarizing show that people tend to love or hate, so if you’re not into anime, please don’t let it dissuade you from watching other works in the medium (and I’d be happy to provide recommendations). I keep going back to it (and its excellent soundtrack) whenever I need a reminder that nobody but me can achieve my dreams, and that I can’t let either internally or externally imposed roadblocks stop me.

What we face is a monumental task, but deciding it’s impossible would be nothing but a self-fulfilling prophesy. Just like Naota, even when nobody believes in him, the only real option is to give it everything we’ve got.
