„Your mind-set is your primary weapon“ (Jeff Cooper)
As a small update to my username „stay out of the red zone“ I would like to talk about the color code of Jeff Cooper, a US military and gun expert. It should be a guidance on when to be in which level of alertness. It affects anybody, everywhere, in a public transport, on the street, in a cinema or airport,.. And yes, most likely you will never be in a situation to think in these categories, but if it gets nasty, you are better off if aware about it. I simplified the code a bit and adapted for non-gun carriers.
• White - Unaware and unprepared. If attacked in Condition White, the only thing that may save you is the inadequacy or lack of consequence of your attacker. The surprise effect will hit you merciless (from street fights we know that who attacks first often wins). You should be only at home in this Condition.
• Yellow - Relaxed alert. No specific threat situation. Your mindset is that "today could be the day I may have to defend myself". You are simply aware that the world is a potentially unfriendly place and that you are prepared to defend yourself, if necessary. You should always be in Yellow whenever you are in unfamiliar surroundings or among people you don't know. In Yellow, you use your eyes and ears to take in surrounding information in a relaxed but alert manner, like a continuous 360 degree radar sweep.
• Orange - Specific alert. Something is not quite right and has your attention. Trust your sixth sense, if he warns you. Your radar has picked up a specific alert. You shift your primary focus to determine if there is a threat. In Condition Orange, you set a mental trigger: "If that person does "X", I will need to get active". in Orange can be a bit of a mental strain, but you can stay in it for as long as you need to. If the threat proves to be nothing, you shift back to Condition Yellow.
• Red - Condition Red is fight. Your mental trigger (established back in Condition Orange) has been tripped. "If 'X' happens I will defend myself (or stop that person if possible)" — 'X' has happened, you need to be engaged now.
In summary, if the level of threat rises, the measures to be taken need to adapt. But prerequisite is that you activily detect the level of threat! As alternative to fight, flight or hide may be indicated, but both have nothing to do with the color code of awareness. To weigh those 3 options warrants an essay by itself and is strongly dependent on the very situation.

Als kleines Update zu meinem username „stay out of the red zone“ stelle ich Euch - falls noch nicht bekannt - den Farbcode nach Jeff Cooper (ein US Militär- und Schusswaffenexperte) vor, der eine Hilfestellung sein soll, in welcher Situation welches Level an Aufmerksamkeit erforderlich ist. Es betrifft jeden Einzelnen, und grundsätzlich immer, in der U-Bahn, auf der Strasse, im Kino, in einem Flughafen, etc. Und ja, es wird höchstwahrscheinlich nicht notwendig sein, in diesen Kategorien zu denken, aber falls man in eine brenzlige Situation kommt, dann ist es gut, darüber informiert zu sein. Ich habe den Code etwas vereinfacht und adaptiert für Nicht-Waffenbesitzer (was im Alltag in Europa zu 99,99% der Fall ist).
• Weiß − Unaufmerksam und unvorbereitet. Wenn angegriffen im Status Weiß, rettet Euch nur die Unfähigkeit oder fehlende Konsequenz des Angreifers. Ein Überraschungsmoment des Angreifers trifft Euch erbarmungslos (aus Strassenkämpfen weiss man: wer zuerst zuschlägt, hat oft schon gewonnen). Man sollte sich nur innerhalb der eigenen vier Wände in diesem Aufmerksamkeitszustand befinden.
• Gelb − Entspannt alarmiert. Es liegt keine spezifische Bedrohung vor, jedoch besteht die Gedankenhaltung „heute könnte der Tag sein, an dem ich mich verteidigen muss“. Man ist sich bewusst, dass die Welt ein potentiell unfreundlicher Ort ist, und man ist darauf vorbereitet, sich notfalls zu verteidigen. Man sollte im Zustand Gelb sein, wann immer man in ungewohnter Umgebung ist, oder mit Personen zu tun hat, die man nicht kennt. Man hält Augen und Ohren offen und achtet auf Informationen aus der Umgebung, in einer entspannten aber aufmerksamen Weise.
• Orange − Spezifisch alarmiert. Etwas ist nicht ganz in Ordnung und erregt Aufmerksamkeit. Vertraut Eurem „sechsten Sinn“ wenn er Euch warnt. Man richtet sein Hauptaugenmerk darauf, herauszufinden ob es eine Bedrohung gibt. In Zustand Orange setzt man einen gedanklichen Auslöser: „Wenn 'x' passiert, muss ich aktiv werden.“ Zustand Orange bewirkt eine gewisse Anspannung, kann aber auch für längere Zeit aufrechterhalten werden falls nötig. Wenn die Bedrohung sich als unbegründet erweist, schaltet man auf Gelb zurück.
• Rot − Zustand Rot ist der Kampf. Der gedankliche Auslöser, der in Orange aufgebaut wurde, wurde überschritten. „Wenn 'x' passiert, verteidige ich mich (oder stoppe den Angreifer, sofern man die Möglichkeit dazu hat).“ – „x“ ist passiert, jetzt muss gehandelt werden.
Zusammengefasst, so wie der Grad der Gefährdung ansteigt, so steigt auch die Bereitschaft, Maßnahmen zu ergreifen. Voraussetzung ist aber, dass Ihr diesen Gefährdungsgrad aktiv erkennt! Als Alternative zu Kampf kommen auch Flucht oder Verstecken in Betracht. Aber beide haben nichts mit dem Farbcode der Aufmerksamkeit zu tun, und die Optionen gegeneinander abzuwägen, würde hier den Rahmen sprengen und hängt stark von der jeweiligen Situation ab.
