Agriculture is the foundation of our society, as it's what effectively brought humanity out of a scattering of hunter-gatherer tribes. It has allowed us to accomplish a great deal, but at the cost of our natural environment through lack of understanding, greed, or technological limitations.
The damage done was severe, yet still limited in scope until the 20th century, when full scale mechanization and chemical abuse of the soil became a reality. Since that time, when agriculture changed from a lifestyle into an industry, we have depleted our soils, forests, and grasslands. We've subscribed to centralization and "bigger is better" mentalities with the "fencerow to fencerow" mantra of the 1970s still pervading today. In this process, whether by accident or by design, family farms began to die.
For much of human history, family farms have been at the center of agriculture as we know it. The family farms of today are multi-million dollar corporations overseeing thousands of acres; the same acres which used to support tens if not hundreds of families. Food quality is at an all-time low. Toxicity in food as well as our environment run rampant. Large corporations own or control large tracts of land and continue to manage it inefficiently at best, and destructively at worst. In the process rural communities have become mere shells of their former splendor. Worst of all, much of modern society has lost its connection to the land and it shows in our current society in its health and collective mental state..
That is the problem which I am addressing.
Here is the solution:
Agsurrection is the juxtaposition of three different words, those being Agriculture, Resurrection, and Insurrection, respectively. Agriculture in it's current state is more destructive than its ever been and looks to be continuing down that path toward oblivion. In order to correct that, we need one thing. More farmers. Tenfold, a hundredfold more farmers. Communities springing up around and in support of those farmers. In essence we need to Ressurrect the family farm a million times over.
Now for the third part of the word: Insurrection. In order to effectively alter the path of modern Agriculture for the better, to make sure we don't just create more of the same that we already have, we must usurp control from the current "Ag industry" (an oxymoron of a phrase if ever there was one) at the individual level. We can do that in as many ways as there are individuals. We can change the world for the better by changing our own individual destinies.
Agsurrection.com is dedicated to insurrection by educating anyone who wants to know, in as many ways as possible, about all that is available in agriculture to better serve ourselves, our planet, and our future generations to come. This is personified in the a passage written in 1928 by E.M Tiffany "With the promise of better days, through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us through the struggles of former years."
