Ruff Chain is a public chain that is working to deeply integrate blockchain technology with the Internet of Things. The project started in 2014 by RUFF CEO Roy Li and team. Roy Li is a well-known hacker and was the youngest R&D Director of Android and Symbian operating systems in North America. He is an IoT domain expert and graduate supervisor at Fudan University.
Roy Li understood the problem of the global IoT platform which lacks a unified language and it is likely to cause communications problem between multiple IoT devices. This is because IoT industry is fragmented. Whether they are smart homes, smart home appliances, robots, or smart cars, etc., the networks they connect are fragmented and closed. All vendors using their own language, technic to develop IoT devices. There is no standard of communication for different vendor devices, and their respective influences are also relatively limited.
It’s not only the communication issue but what remains most serious is IoT security. Network attacks in the field of IoT have become a reality, there are many attacks on IoT network in recent times. The main reason is that currently vendors developing IoT devices without considering the security as standard and that’s why hackers are targeting these devices to steal the user data, and other sensitive information. There will be thousands of IoT devices in market and according to the data released by China National Vulnerability Database (CNVD), 80% of all IoT terminal equipment and devices are subject to the risk of privacy disclosure or abuse; 70% of them have no encryption in their network communications; 60% of them have vulnerabilities in their web interfaces, and 60% of them do not have their software updates encrypted. Once IoT device is attacked, no user will have any privacy, all sensitive information will be lost or will be I hand of hackers. It is difficult to reach a unified standard in a short period of time.
Ruff team understood this limitation of IoT devices and decided to combine the Internet of Things technology with the blockchain.
Why blockchain? Everyone knows that, blockchain is a computer database that records transaction data, but such databases are stored in many different places. Additionally, its distributed network architecture provides a mechanism that allows equipment and devices to reach certain consensus, without the need to authenticate with the data center (server). In that manner, even if one or two nodes are attacked, the data of the entire network system are still reliable and secured.
The key problem that Ruff want to solve is about providing trusted ability of systems or software to exchange and make use of information between different IoT devices and using these devices’ computing power to build an open Ruff ecosystem. And that’s why Ruff team developed OS specifically for IoT devices, which is based on the JavaScript development language and it supports cross-platform code running. It’s an open, efficient and quick IoT app development platform for software development. Hardware can be operated by just calling the program library, significantly lowering the threshold of IoT app development and providing a standardized IoT OS for IoT layer access.
Also, the security of IoT devices is guaranteed by the OS’s security. Ruff OS uses a symmetric key, and it’s not transmitted over the network. In addition, the chain network releases a one-time token based on the timestamp to the application network, which therefore resists replay attacks as well.
