Decentralization is considered to be an important aspect in the crypto world. However, IOTA did not hide the fact that in their current set up they’re partially a centralized system and would have serious existence issues if they removed the Coordinator (COO).
The coordinator reportedly secure the network from 34% attacks specifically. Moreover, IOTA is not the only one to have used coordinator, other cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC) and Litecoin (LTC) have also used something similar. Once the coordinator is removed, IOTA will be faster and will scale better. It is because the tangle cannot scale well beyond tens of transactions per second with the COO.
