As we know IPFS is a peer to peer filesystem and those p2p systems rely heavy on multiple computers holding and sending the information you want. We've talked about the costs for storage in the previous post. So here is what d.tube does: d.tube pays one IPFS provider a certain amount of money to store your videos for 4.75 years. [1] You are welcome to host your own IPFS node or pay a IPFS provider instead.
Should I let you use my IPFS node to host your videos? Nope!
Was war nochmal IPFS? IPFS ist ein "Peer to Peer" Dateisystem. Solche P2P Systeme sind aber nur nützlich, wenn mehrere Computer die gleiche Information anbieten. Zur Zeit bezahlt d.tube hingegen aber nur einen Anbieter um Deine Videos für jeweils 4,75 Jahre zu speichern. [1] Natürlich kannst du auch Deine eigene IPFS Node betreiben, oder einen anderen Betreiber dafür bezahlen.
Würde ich dir meine IPFS Node zur Nutzung freigeben? Vermutlich nicht.

Please don't get me wrong:
The average user sees, that his/her videos get hosted by YouTube for a very long time, and probably as long as YouTube would exist. What they don't see: they pay with private data and advertisement.
On the other hand there is a lack of concept on d.tube:
What motivation would a average user have to pay for hosting his/her videos?
What motivation would a average user have to host an IPFS node on his/her private DSL connection and let a device run for 24/7 (and it's probably not a good idea to let that user manage a whole server...)
What motivation would I have to store other's stuff for free?
For that last question: storage and bandwidth costs me real money.
To sum up : I'm now running my own IPFS node and tried to add my videos. I've failed with one video: it seems like that 15 days old video is not available via IPFS anymore. I've tried the IPFS WebGateways as well as IPFS direct, both the "Source" and "480p" version are not available via IPFS anymore. So I can't pin them.
I've used a wrong codec on the source version (that was my first video on d.tube...) so that one wouldn't work if I add it to IPFS manually and the 480p version was created by d.tube's servers - which isn't available anymore.
I could repost the video - but I think that shouldn't be the go-to way (and I hate reposts). On the official d.tube Discord none of the admins seem to bother with this problem.
I'm happy for any comments on how to solve that or if you have any problems with reposts.
I think the d.tube admins should be more transparent about there concept and clearly communicate to the average user. Until then: I'm not convinced that centralizing a decentral infrastructure is a good idea. But I'm happy to support d.tube on its path.

Der normale Durchschnittsuser, der seine Videos auf YouTube hochlädt, erwartet, dass seine Videos da auch ziemlich lange online bleiben - solange YouTube noch existieren wird.
Was sie nicht wissen: sie zahlen mit ihren Daten und mit Werbung.
Auf der anderen Seite steht d.tube da mit fehlenden Konzepten.

Welche Motivation hat ein Durchschnittsnutzer eine IPFS Node an seinem DSL-Anschluss zu betreiben und dafür ein Gerät 24/7 laufen zu lassen (abgesehen davon, dass es wohl unklug ist, einen solchen jemand einen Server administrieren zu lassen)

Um zum Schluss zu kommen: Ich habe jetzt eine eigene IPFS Node und habe versucht meine Videos hinzuzufügen. Bei einem Video klappte das nicht, es ist nämlich seit ein paar Tagen nicht mehr über IPFS verfügbar; dabei ist es erst 15 Tage alt.
Ich habe es bereits über die IPFS WebGateways und über IPFS direkt versucht: es ist weg. Sowohl die "Source" Version, als auch die "480p" Variante. Also kann ich es nicht über meine IPFS Node anbieten.
Ich habe übrigens einen falschen Codec verwendet (es war mein erstes Video für d.tube) - also kann ich es jetzt nicht mehr manuell hinzufügen. Die 480p Version, die von den d.tube Servern erstellt wurde, an die komme ich jetzt auch nicht mehr heran. Somit bleibt mir nur das Video zu reposten - ich denke aber nicht, dass das der gangbare Weg sein sollte, außerdem mag ich keine Reposts. Auf dem offiziellen d.tube Discord wollte sich auch kein Admin dem Problem annehmen.
Ich freue mich aber über Kommentare, wie man das lösen könnte; und ob ihr irgendwelche Probleme mit einem Repost hättet. Mein Tipp an die d.tube Admins: mehr Transparenz über eure Konzepte und deutlichere Kommunikation in Richtung der Durchschnittsnutzer. Bis dahin bin ich nicht davon überzeugt, dass die Zentralisierung einer dezentralen Infrastruktur eine so coole Idee ist. Trotzdem unterstütze ich diese Plattform gerne auf ihrem Weg.
