History of Palestine until the arrival of Islam
Initially, the size of the Palestinian land, known as Kanan, is 2,500 sq km. The country is situated on the east coast of the Mediterranean and adjacent to Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Palestine is a fertile and balanced country. After about four-and-a-third (430) years of coming to Jacob in Egypt, Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) began to direct Israel to transfer the land from Egypt to the Promised Land. And because of this disobedience, for 40 years this community has lost its way in the desert without any aim.
Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) did not refrain from giving guidance to his confused community for a long time. But the Israelites continued to revolt and rebel repeatedly. After Prophet Moses (peace be upon him), Yusha was taken to the house of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) to show the Israelites from Jordan. Since then this community used to loot and kill genocide in any new city. As a result, the King of Jerusalem, in connection with Yusha and the Israelis, in a battle with the king of five other cities. But when all of them were defeated, the children of Israel were hanged on the gallows. However, Palestinian nations continued their resistance against aggressors and ultimately defeated Israeli people. Yet, there are several war bunds between the two communities. Finally, the power of the Israeli nation increased and was able to establish dominance over different cities. About a thousand years before the birth of Jesus, Prophet David was able to liberate Jerusalem from the hands of Palestinians, and there, Baitul Mukaddas built the house of Allah. The son of Prophet David (peace be upon him) completed the work of the construction of the house of Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) Baitul Mukaddas. Baitul Mukaddas was built in the Makkah Sharif after about eleven hundred years (1100 years) after the construction of the Ka'bah by Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) and nine hundred seventy (970 years) of the birth of Jesus. Prophet David of the house of the Ka'bah is the 14th Prophet of the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him). On the other hand, according to the Bible of Matthew, about eighty-eight men of Prophet David with the Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). In this way, the first Haram Sharif of Tauhid has become Makka (Ka'ba) and Mosque al-Aqsa (al-Quds) becomes the second haram.
Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) is a Muslim, according to the tradition of the Muslims, that the small rounds of the Prophet Moses had left the newborn Musa and flung the Nilanad. In 586 BCE, during the time of Bakhnacha, when the Jewish land was attacked by the Assyrian community, the Israelis collapsed and they were captured. Since Bethlehem (Baitul lahum) is considered to be the birthplace of Jesus and the center of his so called shrine, then since then Jerusalem was considered to be the central city of Christians. There are many churches built there. From 135 BC to five hundred years, many Jews only lived in the house of Baitul Mukaddas.

জেরুজালেম বা বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস শহরটি এমন এক পাহাড়ী এলাকায় অবসি’ত যার মুরিয়া পাহাড়ের চূড়ায় ইয়াহবা বা জেহুভা মন্দির রয়েছে। বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস ফিলিস্তিনের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এলাকা। শহরটি পূর্বদিক থেকে যায়ন নামক পাহাড় ও পশ্চিম দিক থেকে যয়তুন নামক পাহাড় দিয়ে ঘেরা। যায়ন তথা রৌদ্রোজ্জ্বল পাহাড়ের নাম তৌরাত ও ইঞ্জিলেও বর্ণিত হয়েছে।
ফিলিস্তিনের ঘটনাবহুল ইতিহাস অতীতকালের নবীগণের কাহিনী দিয়ে শুরু হয়। হযরত ইয়াকুবের (আঃ) নাম ছিল ইসরাইল। বনি ইসরাইল হযরত ইয়াকুবেরই বংশধর। খৃস্টপূর্ব তের শতাব্দী যাবত তারা সেখানে ক্ষমতাধর ছিলেন। মিশরে ফেরাউনের রাজত্বকালে এবং হযরত মূসার (আঃ) আগমনের পূর্বে ইসরাইলীদের জনসংখ্যা খবই বৃদ্ধি পায়। মিশরে হযরত ইয়াকুবের (আঃ) আগমনের প্রায় চারশ’ তিরিশ (৪৩০) বছর পর হযরত মূসা (আঃ) বনি ইসরাইলকে মিশর থেকে প্রতিশ্রুতি ভূ-খন্ডে স্থানান্তরের জন্য পরিচালনা শুরু করেন। এ পরিক্রমা ঘটনাবহুল চল্লিশ বছর যাবত অব্যাহত থাকে। এ সময়ই হযরত মূসা (আঃ) যখন চল্লিশ দিনের জন্য তাঁর গোত্র ছেড়ে দশ অধ্যায়বিশিষ্ট খোদায়ী নির্দেশনামা আনতে অদৃশ্য হয়ে যান তখন বনি ইসরাইল পুনরায় মূর্তি পূজায় আত্মনিয়োগ করে। আর এই নাফরমানীর কারণেই চল্লিশ বছর ধরে এ সমপ্রদায় মরুভূমিতে লক্ষ্যহীনভাবে পথ হারিয়ে ঘুরে বেড়ায়।
হযরত মূসা (আঃ) এই দীর্ঘ সময় ধরেও স্বীয় বিভ্রান্ত সমপ্রদায়কে হেদায়েত দান থেকে বিরত হননি। কিন্তু বনী ইসরাইল বার বার বিদ্রোহ ও সীমালংঘন করা অব্যাহত রাখে। হযরত মূসা (আঃ)- এর ওফাতের পর ইউশা বনী ইসরাইলীকে জর্দান থেকে দেখিয়ে নেয়ার ব্যাপারে হযরত মুসার স’লাভিষিক্ত হন। তখন থেকে এ সমপ্রদায় যে কোন নতুন শহরে উপনীত হতো সেখানেই লুটতরাজ ও গণহত্যা চালাতো। ফলে জেরুজালেমের বাদশাহ আরো পাঁচটি শহরের বাদশাহর সাথে মৈত্রী স্থাপন করে একযোগে ইউশা ও বনী ইসরাইলের সাথে যুদ্ধে নামে। কিন্তু এরা সবাই পরাজিত হলে বনী ইসরাইল এদের ফাঁসীকাষ্ঠে ঝোলায়। তবে ফিলিস্তিনী জাতি আগ্রাসীদের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিরোধ অব্যাহত রাখে এবং শেষ পর্যন্ত বনি ইসরাইলকে পরাজিত করে। এরপরও দুই সমপ্রদায়ের মাঝে আরো বেশ ক’টি যুদ্ধ বাঁধে। অবশেষে বনি ইসরাইলের শক্তি বেড়ে যায় এবং বিভিন্ন শহরের উপর আধিপত্য প্রতিষ্ঠায় সক্ষম হয়। হযরত ঈসা আলাইহিস সালামের জন্মের প্রায় এক হাজার বছর আগে হযরত দাউদ (আঃ) ফিলিস্তিনীদের হাত থেকে জেরুজালেমকে মুক্ত করতে সক্ষম হন এবং সেখানে বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস তথা আল্লাহর ঘর নির্মাণ করেন। হযরত দাউদ (আঃ)-এর পুত্র হযরত সুলায়মান (আঃ) বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসের নির্মাণ কাজ সম্পূর্ণ করেন। মক্কা শরীফে হযরত ইবরাহীম (আঃ) কর্তৃক কা’বা শরীফ নির্মাণের প্রায় এগারো শ’ (১১০০) বছর পর এবং হযরত ঈসা (আঃ)-এর জন্মের নয়শ’ সত্তর (৯৭০) বছর আগে বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস নির্মিত হয়। কা’বা ঘরের নির্মাতা হযরত ইবরাহিমের চৌদ্দতম অধঃস-ন পুরুষ হচ্ছেন হযরত দাউদ (আঃ) । অন্যদিকে মেথিউর বাইবেল অনুসারে হযরত ঈসার (আঃ) -এর সাথে হযরত দাউদের সম্পর্কে আটাশ পুরুষের। আর এভাবেই তৌহিদপন্থীদের প্রথম হারাম শরীফ হয়ে দাঁড়ায় মক্কা (কা’বা) এবং মসজিদুল আকসা (আল কুদস) পরিণত হয় দ্বিতীয় হারামে।
হযরত মুসা (আঃ)-এর ভেলাটি হচ্ছে মুসলমানদের রেওয়ায়েত অনুসারে সেই ছোট গোলাকার ভেলা যাতে হযরত মুসার মা নবজাত মুসাকে রেখে নীলনদে ভাসিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন। পরবর্তীকালে হযরত মুসা (আঃ) এই ভেলার ভেতর তাঁর নির্দেশাবলী ও ওহীর লিপিকা বোর্ডগুলো, বর্ম ও নব্যুয়তের নিদর্শনাদি রাখেন। এতে হাত দেয়ার অনুমতি কারো ছিল না। হযরত দাউদের সময় এ ভেলাটির বাইরের দিক ও ভেতরের দিকটিকে সোনার প্রলেপ দিয়ে অলঙ্ককৃত করা হয় এবং একে যায়ন পাহাড়ে নিয়ে আসেন। এরপর একে কেন্দ্র করে একটি কোরআন গাহ তৈরী করা হয়। এ ভেলাটি কিছুকাল বিজয়ী ফিলিস্তিনদের হাতে আসে। অতঃপর পুনরায় তা বনি ইসরাইলের কাছে ফিরিয়ে দেয়া হয়। হযরত সুলায়মানের (আঃ)-এর সময় পর্যন্ত এটি যায়ন পাহাড়েই ছিল। কিন্তু বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস নির্মাণের পর ভেলাটিকে কুদস শরীফে স্থানান্তর করা হয়। হযরত সুলায়মান (আঃ) চল্লিশ বছর বাদশাহী করেন এবং বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসে শান্তি প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেন। কিন্তু তাঁর ইনে-কালের পর বনি ইসরাইল আবারো জুলুম-অত্যাচার ও লুটতরাজ শুরু করে। খৃষ্টপূর্ব ৭৩০ সালে শালমুনসায় বনি ইসরাইলের উপর আক্রমণ চালায় এবং এদের অনেককে বন্দী করে নেয়। এছাড়া সে জেরুজালেমে বনি ইসরাইলের বদলে ব্যাবিলনীদের অভিভাসন দান করে। খৃষ্টপূর্ব ৫৮৬ সালেও বখনাছেরের সময় ইয়াহুদী ভূখন্ডটি আশুরী সমপ্রদায়ের হামলার শিকার হলে বনি ইসরাইলের পতন ঘটে এবং এরা বন্দী হয়। এতে ইয়াহুদীদের রাজত্ব ও বাদশাহী ভেঙ্গে পড়ে এবং ইসরাইলের জনতা ছত্রভঙ্গ কিংবা ব্যাবিলনীদের হাতে বন্দী হয়। আগ্রাসীরা সুলায়মানের (আঃ)-ইবাদতখানাটি ধ্বংস করে ফেলে।
আল কুদস নির্মাণের ৪৮০ বছর পূর্বে (খৃষ্টপূর্ব প্রায় তেরশো বছর আগে)ইউশা বিন নুনের নেতৃত্বে বনি ইসরাইল ও ইয়াহুদী সমপ্রদায়ের ফিলিস্তিন ভূ-খন্ডে আগমনের পর থেকে এ দেশটি আনন্দের মুখ দেখেনি। সেই থেকে আজ পর্যন্ত তিনহাজার তিনশো বছর ধরে ফিলিস্তিন ভূ-খন্ডে অশান্তির আগুনে জ্বলছে।
ইয়াহুদী সমপ্রদায়ের পরবর্তী নবীগণ, যেমন হযরত আরমিয়া আশইয়া ও দানিয়েল (আঃ)-এর (ইরানের শুশ শহরে তাঁর মাজার) মত নবীরা জেরুজালেমের ধ্বংস ও বনি ইসরাইলের দুঃখ-কষ্ট ও বন্দীত্ব প্রত্যক্ষ করেছেন এবং এদের সান্ত্বনা ও প্রবোধ দিয়েছেন। তাঁরা সব সময়ই ইয়াহুদীদের মুক্তির ও মহান মুক্তিদাতার আগমনের সুসংবাদ দান করতেন। তাঁদের বাণী, কবিতা ও শ্লোক তৌরাতে উল্লেখ রয়েছে। এ সময়ই পারস্যে বাদশাহ সাইরাসের আবির্ভাব ঘটে। তিনি একের পর এক রাজ্য বিজয় শুরু করেন। এ বিষয়টি ইয়াহুদী সমপ্রদায় ও এদের নেতাদের উল্লসিত করে তুলে। শেষ পর্যন্ত সাইরাস ব্যাবিলনকেও দখল করে নিয়ে ইয়াহুদী সমপ্রদায় ও বনি ইসরাইলকে মুক্ত করে দেন এবং এদের ফিলিস্তিন ও জেরুজালেমে প্রত্যাবর্তন করান । সাইরাস সকল ধর্ম ও সমপ্রদায়ের সাথে সদাচারণ করতেন এবং তারই নির্দেশে আল্লাহর ঘর (আল্ কুদস) পুনরায় নির্মিত হয়। জেরুজালেমের শান্তিপূর্ণ অবস্থা তৃতীয় দারিউস বাদশার সময় পর্যন্ত অব্যাহত থাকে। খৃষ্টপূর্ব ৩২৩ সালে আলেকজান্ডার মিশর, সিরিয়া, ফিলিস্তিন, ফানিকিয়া ও ইরানের উপর আগ্রাসন শুরু করেন। এতে পুনরায় এসব দেশে দেদার ধংসযজ্ঞ , গণহত্যা ও লুটতরাজ নেমে আসে। ইরান তথা পারস্যের সকল ধনভান্ডার লুট হয়ে যায়। ইরানের খুশাইয়ারবাদশা কর্তৃক এথেন্স ধ্বংস হওয়ার প্রতিশোধ হিসাবে আলেকজান্ডার তখতে জামাশদ তথা পারসেপোলিসকে জ্বালিয়ে পুড়িয়ে ছারখার করেন এবং স্বীয় অধিনায়কদের বিজিত শহর ও দেশগুলোর শাসক হিসাবে নিয়োগ করেন।
আলেকজান্ডারের পর তার উত্তরসূরিরা ফিলিস্তিনের উপর আধিপত্য বিস্তার করে। খৃষ্টপূর্ব ৬৩ সন থেকে সেখানে রোমকদের আধিপত্য শুরু হয় ওরা আর্মেনিয়া ,এশিয়ার কিছু অংশ ও আফ্রিকায় আগ্রাসন চালানোর পর সিরিয়া ও ফিলিস্তিনের উপর চড়াও হয়। এদের হাতে বারো হাজার ইয়াহুদী নিহত ও বহু শহর ধ্বংস হয়।
এরকম পরিসি’তিতে হযরত ঈসা (আ.)-এর আগমন ছিলো ওই অঞ্চলের জনগণের জন্য আশা-ভরসা ও কামনা-বাসনার উৎস যাতে তারা মুক্তি পেতে পারে। হযরত ঈসা (আঃ) যখন জালিল প্রদেশস’ নাছেরায় তাঁর ও তাঁর পরিবারবর্গের জন্মস্থান ছেড়ে সাহাবীদের (হাওয়ারী) নিয়ে জেরুজালেমের উদ্দেশ্যে যাত্রা করেন তখন তিনি প্রচুর মুজেজা ও কেরামতি প্রদর্শন করেন। বাইবেলে (ইঞ্জিলে) এসবের পূর্ণ বিবরণ রয়েছে। হযরত ঈসা (আঃ) জেরুজালেমে (বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসে) অবসি’ত ইবাদতগাহে সব সময় যাতায়াত করতেন এবং প্রতিদিন জনগণকে শিক্ষা-দানে মশগুল থাকতেন। এ বিষয়টি ইয়হুদী মোল্লাদের হিংসা-বিদ্বেষকে প্রজ্বলিত করে। এরা আল্লাহর নবীকে উৎখাত করার ষড়যন্ত্রে লিপ্ত হয়।
শেষ পর্যন্ত ইয়াহুদী পরিষদের ফতোয়ায় ও চক্রানে- ইয়াহুদী ভূ-খন্ডের রোমীয় শাসক হযরত ঈসাকে (আঃ) ফাঁসীকাষ্ঠে ও ক্রুশে বিদ্ধ করে হত্যা করে। (অবশ্য এ শাসক হযরত ঈসার একজন ভক্ত অনুরাগী ছিল।) তবে কুরআন মজিদ হযরত ঈসার ক্রুশবিদ্ধ হওয়ার কথা অস্বীকার করেছে এবং বলেছে, ‘‘আল্লাহ তাঁকে নিজের দিকে উপরে উঠিয়ে নেন। মসিহকে ওরা হত্যাও করতে পারেনি এবং ফাঁসিতেও ঝুলাতে সক্ষম হয়নি। বরং ওদের কাছে ওই রকমই প্রতিভাত হয়েছিল।’’ যাহোক হযরত ঈসা মসিহ চিরন্তন হয়ে গেলেন এবং প্রচুর অনুসারী জন্ম নিলো। হযরত ঈসার বিশেষ অনুরাগী রোমক শাসক এ ঘটনার পর থেকে ইয়াহুদীদের প্রতি কঠোর আচরণ শুরু করে। ফলে একের পর এক ইয়াহুদী বিদ্রোহ মাথা চাড়া দিয়ে উঠে আর রোমকরাও এদের ওপর ব্যাপক হত্যাকান্ড চালায়।
সত্তর খৃস্টাব্দে রোম সম্রাটের পুত্র টাইটাস আশি হাজার সৈন্য নিয়ে জেরুজালেম অবরোধ করে। ইয়াহুদীদের কয়েক মাস প্রতিরোধ সত্ত্বেও শেষ পর্যন্ত তারা রোমকদের হাতে ভেঙ্গে পড়ে। রোমকরা বিজয় অর্জন করলে ইয়াহুদীরা পুনরায় আশ্রয়হীন ও শরণার্থীতে পরিণত হয়। হযরত ঈসা মসিহের অন্তর্ধানের প্রায় তিন’শ বছর পর রোম সম্রাট কনস্টান্টিন (৩০৬-৩৩৭ খৃস্টাব্দ) খৃস্টান ধর্ম গ্রহণ করেন এবং এ ধর্মকে সরকারী ধর্ম হিসাব ঘোষণা দেন। ফলে জেরুজালেম আবারো বিশেষ গুরুত্ব লাভ করে। যেহেতু বেথেলহামকে (বায়তুল লাহাম) হযরত ঈসার জন্মস্থান এবং তাঁর কথিত মাজারের কেন্দ্র বলে ধরা হয় সেহেতু এরপর থেকে জেরুজালেম খৃস্টানদের কেন্দ্রীয় শহর বলে গণ্য হতে থাকে। সেখানে বহু গীর্জা নির্মিত হয়। ১৩৫ খৃস্টাব্দ থেকে পাঁচশো বছর সময় পর্যন্ত বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসে আঙ্গুলে গোনা কতিপয় ইয়াহুদী মাত্র বসবাস করতো।
পারস্যের সাসানী বাদশাহ দ্বিতীয় খসরুর রাজত্বকালে ইরান ও রোম সম্রাটের মাঝে ৬০৪ খৃস্টাব্দ থেকে ৬৩০ খৃস্টাব্দ পর্যন্ত লড়াই চলে। এতে ইরানী সৈন্যরা রোমকদের পরাজিত করে। ইরানীদের সহায়ক ইয়াহুদী গোষ্ঠীর পথ নির্দেশ মুতাবেক ইরান জেরুজালেম (ফিলিস্তিন) দখল করে নেয়। কিন্তু সম্রাট খসরু পারভিজের মৃত্যুর পর খৃস্টানরা পুনরায় ফিলিস্তিন দখল করে নেয়।
ইসলাম আগমনের পর বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস
হযরত মুহাম্মাদ সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া আলেহী ওয়াসাল্লামের নবুয়্যত লাভের পরের তের বছরও নবীজী মক্কায় বসবাস করেন। এ সময় মসজিদুল আকসা মুসলমানদের কেবলা ছিল। মদীনায় নবীজীর হিজরত করার দ্বিতীয় বছরে মদীনার নিকটবর্তী বনি সালমা মসজিদে নবীজী সাহাবীদের নিয়ে নামাজ পড়া অবস্থায় আল্লাহ তায়ালার নির্দেশে মসজিদুল আকছার স’লে মসজিদুল হারামকে (মক্কায় কা’বা শরীফ) কেবলায় পরিণত করেন। হয়তো বা ইয়াহুদীদের নিরস্ত্র করার উদ্দেশ্যই আল্লাহ পাক এ নির্দেশ দেন। কেননা ইয়াহুদীদের কেবলার দিকে মুখ করে নামাজ আদায় করার কারণে ইয়াহুদীরা মুসলমানদের হেয় করতো।
রাসূলে খোদার ইনে-কালের পর প্রথম খলিফার সময় সিরিয়া ও ফিলিস্তিনের উদ্দেশ্যে রোমকদের শত্রুতা দমনের জন্যে সৈন্য পাঠানো হয়। কিন্তু প্রথম খলিফার ইনে-কালের ফলে মুসলমানদের বিজয়াভিযান স’গিত হয়ে পড়ে । দ্বিতীয় খলিফার সময় সিরিয়া ও বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস মুসলমানদের হস-গত হয়। রোমক সৈন্যরা মুসলমানদের হাতে পরাজয় বরণ করে। বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসের বাশিন্দারা মুসলমানদের হাতে আত্মসমর্পণ করতে অস্বীকৃতি জানিয়ে প্রতিরোধ অব্যাহত রাখে। কিন্তু দীর্ঘ মেয়াদী অবরোধ, খাদ্য সংকট ও রোগশোকের প্রাদুর্ভাব এদেরকে আত্মসমর্পণে বাধ্য করে।
দ্বিতীয় খলিফা সাদাসিদে পোশাক গায়ে হাতে উটের রশি ধরে শহরে (জেরুজালেম) প্রবেশ করলে শহরবাসী বিস্ময় অভিভূত হয়ে পড়ে। তারা সানন্দে খলিফার সাথে শান্তি চুক্তি সম্পাদন করে। খলিাফা (হযরত ওমর) নাগরিকদের সাথে খুবই নরম ও সদয় ব্যবহার করেন। ওই বছর (১৫ হিজরী) থেকে বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস ও ফিলিস্তিন মুসলমানদের হাতেই ছিল। সন্ধি চুক্তি মুতাবিক খৃস্টানরা তাদের ধর্মীয় আচরণে স্বাধীনতা লাভ করে। পরবর্তীতে এ শহরের বাশিন্দারা বেশীর ভাগই ছিলেন আরব মুসলমান। কুদস মুসলমানদের পয়লা কেবলা হওয়ার ফলে তাদের কাছে অত্যন্ত পবিত্র ও সম্মানীয় হয়ে ওঠে।
১০৯৫ খৃস্টাব্দ (৪৮৮ হিজরী) থেকে ইউরোপীয়রা মুসলমানদের উপর আগ্রাসন চালালে ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধ শুরু হয় এবং প্রায় দু’শ বছর যাবত তা অব্যাহত থাকে। ইউরোপীয়দের এসব আগ্রাসনের অন্যতম প্রধান কারণ ছিল পাশ্চত্যে মুসলমানদের অতীত বিজয়ভিযানের কারণে খৃস্টানদের প্রতিশোধ গ্রহণ, প্রাচ্যের (মুসলিম জাহানের) সম্পদ-ভান্ডারের প্রতি ইউরোপীয়দের লালসা এবং ঈসার পাক মাটি জিয়ারতের মাধ্যমে বেহেশত গমন ইত্যাদি। তবে ঐতিহাসিকরা ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধের মূল কারণ হিসাবে ফিলিস্তিন ও বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস ইস্যু, মুসলমানদের কাছে শহরের খৃস্টানদের পণদান এবং সম্ভবত ওদের সাথে অসদাচরণ ইত্যাদির কথা লিখেছে। মধ্যযুগে অর্থাৎ ৩৯৫ খৃস্টাব্দে প্রাচীন রোম সাম্রাজ্য পশ্চিম রোম ও পূর্বরোমে বিভক্ত হয়ে পড়ার সময় থেকে ১৪৫৩ খৃস্টাব্দে সুলতান ফাতিহ মুহম্মদের হাতে কনস্টান্টিনোপল (ইস্তাম্বুল) বিজয়ের আগ পর্যন্ত ইউরোপ ছিল গীর্জার স্বৈরতান্ত্রিক শাসনের কেন্দ্র। পোপ যুদ্ধ শুরু করার জন্য ষড়যন্ত্রে লিপ্ত হন এবং পাদ্রীদের মাধ্যমে রটিয়ে দেন যে, ফিলিস্থিনে ঈসা (আঃ) -এর আর্বিভাবের নিদের্শনাদি প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। ফলে বহু সংখ্যক খৃস্টান হযরত ঈসার আবির্ভাব দেখার জন্য বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসের উদ্দেশ্যে রওয়ানা হয়। আর পাদ্রীরা হযরত ঈসার আগমনকে বছরের পর বছর পিছিয়ে দিতে থাকে। এতে করে ফিলিস্তিনগামী জনতার সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি পেয়ে চলে। ওদের ওসব ষড়যন্ত্রের প্রথম দিকেই একজন পাদ্রী সাতশ’ তীর্থযাত্রী নিয়ে বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসের উদ্দেশ্যে রওয়ানা হন। কিন্তু তিনি সাইপ্রাস হয়ে ইউরোপে ফিরে যান এবং গুজব ছড়িয়ে দেন যে মুসলমানরা তাদের শহরে প্রবেশ করতে দেয়নি। এসব পটভূমি ও ষড়যন্ত্রের ফলেই এমন এক যুদ্ধের আগুন জ্বলে ওঠে যার লেলিহান শিখা দুশ’ বছর পর্যন্ত দাউ দাউ করে জ্বলতে থাকে। পাদ্রীদের প্রচরণা ও প্ররোচনায় তখন প্রায় সাত লাখ দরিদ্র নিঃস্ব খৃস্টান জনতা সামরিক দলপতি তথা নাইটদের সাথে আল কুদসের উদ্দেশ্যে রওয়ানা হয়। পথে পথে এদর সংখ্যা বাড়তে থাকে এবং কোন কোন সূত্রে এদের সংখ্যা কয়েক মিলিয়নে পৌঁছার কথা বলা হয়েছে। কিন্তু তিন বছরের এ পথচলা যুদ্ধ, লুটতরাজ ও ক্রমাগত অগ্রযাত্রার পর মাত্র চল্লিশ হাজার লোক বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসে পৌঁছে। অন্যরা হয় মুসলমানদের সাথে যুদ্ধে নিহত হয়েছে কিংবা রোগে শোকে মারা গেছে।
বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস দীর্ঘদিন অবরোধ থাকার পর তীব্র লড়াইয়ের মধ্য দিয়ে ক্রুসেড বাহিনী শহরে প্রবেশ করে এবং গণহত্যা ও সর্বস্ব লুন্ঠনে হাত দেয়। ক্রুসেড বাহিনীর অধিনায়ক গোডাফর পরবর্তীতে শহরের রাজা হয়। বিজয়ের পর পোপের কাছে লিখিত পত্রে সে জানায় আপনি যদি জানতে চান বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসে আমাদের হাতে বন্দীদের সাথে কি আচরণ করা হয়েছে তাহলো এতটুকু জেনে নিনঃ ‘আমাদের সৈন্যরা মুসলমানদের রক্তের গভীর স্রোত পাড় হয়ে সুলায়মান মন্দিরে পৌঁছে। রক্ত ঘোড়াগুলোর উরু পর্যন্ত পৌঁছেছে।’
খৃস্টানরা এভাবে (৯০) বছর ফিলিস্তিনের উপর শাসন চালায়। দ্বিতীয় ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধের শেষ দিকে (১১৪৭ খৃঃ-১১৪৯ খৃঃ তথা ৫৪২ হিঃ-৫৪৪ হিঃ) সুলতান সালাহুদ্দীন আইয়ুবী ক্রুসেড বাহিনীকে নাস্তানাবুদ করে বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসকে উদ্ধার করেন এবং শক্রদেরকে সিরিয়া, মিশর ও অন্যান্য অঞ্চল থেকে বহিস্কৃত করেন। এরপর স্রোতের বেগে ইউরোপ থেকে সৈন্য সামন্ত ক্রুসেডারদের সাথে যোগ দিতে থাকে। আবার যুদ্ধের দামামা বেজে উঠলে তৃতীয় ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধ শুরু হয় (১১৮৯ খৃঃ-১১৯২ খৃঃ/৫৮৫ হিঃ)। বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসের পতনকে খৃস্টানদের অবমাননা বলে গণ্য করে পোপ যুদ্ধের ফতোয়া জারি করে। মুসলমানদের হাতে পরাজয়ের পর ইউরোপের সম্রাটগণ ও পোপের দল পারস্পরিক অনৈক্য ভুলে যায় এবং ফ্রান্স ও বৃটেনের রাজা উভয়ই সরাসরি যুদ্ধে নামে। এরা নিজেদের বিজয়াভিযান অব্যাহত রেখে মুসলমানদের খুনে বন্যা সৃষ্টি করতে থাকে। এদের পৈশাচিক বর্বরতার বিস্তারিত বিবরণ ইউরোপীয় ঐতিহাসিকদের যেমন, আলবার মালাহ, গোস্তাভ লোভোন ও অন্যান্যের গ্রনে’ রয়েছে।
সালাহুদ্দীন আইয়ুবীর ইনে-কালের পর আইয়ুবী বংশ শাসন কার্য চালাতে থাকে। ইউরোপ ও পোপদের সাথে রাজা-বাদশাহের প্রচুর দ্বন্দ্ব সংঘাত চলার পর অবশেষে তৃতীয় পোপ এ্যানিউসান রাজাদের কাজের অংশ হিসাবে ঘোষণা দিয়ে মুসলমানদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধের নির্দেশ জারী করে। এভাবে তিন বছর সন্ধি চলার পর পুনরায় যুদ্ধের (চতুর্থ ক্রুসেড) আগুন জ্বলে উঠে। ক্রসেড বাহিনী কনস্টান্টিনোপল জয় করে নেয়, সেখানে নয়া রাজা বসায় এবং চতুর্থ ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধেরও অবসান ঘটে।
পোপ এ্যানিউসান ও তাঁর উত্তরাধিকারীর উস্কানিতে পঞ্চম ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধের (১২১৭-১২২১ খৃঃ/৬১৪-৬১৮ হিঃ) আগুন প্রজ্বলিত হয়। পোপগণ ইউরোপীয় রাজাদের প্রতি বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস উদ্ধারের আহবান জানান। কিন্তু ওরা তা প্রত্যাখান করে। ফলে পোপ নিজেই মুসলমানদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধের ঘোষণা দান করে। পঞ্চম ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধে খৃস্টান বাহিনী পরাজিত হয়ে ইউরোপ ফিরে যায়।
পোপ তৃতীয় এ্যানারিউসের উস্কানিতে ষষ্ঠ ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধ বাঁধে। জার্মানীর রাজা ফ্রেডারিক প্রথমতঃ পোপের আহবানে সাড়া দেন। কিন্তু পরে অনুতপ্ত হয়ে প্রত্যাখান করে। এতে পোপ তাকে কাফের বলে ঘোষণা দেন। এতে ফ্রেডারিক পোপকে বন্দী করে নিজেই বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসের উদ্দেশ্যে রওয়ানা হন। সে সময় আইয়ুবী বংশীয় শাসকদের ভেতর তীব্র অনৈক্য ও মতভেদকারী মুসলমানগণ ক্রুসেডারদের সাথে সন্ধি করে বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস ছেড়ে দিতে বাধ্য হন। তবে শর্ত থাকে যে, মসজিদুল আকসা মুসলমানদের হাতে থাকবে।
সপ্তম ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধ সেন্ট লুইয়ের মিশর আক্রমনের মধ্য দিয়ে শুরু (১২৪৮-১২৫৪ খৃঃ/৬৪৬-৬৫২ হিঃ) হয়। গাজা উপত্যকায় খৃস্টান বাহিনী পরাজিত হলে নবম লুই এর প্রতিশোধ গ্রহণের জন্য যুদ্ধে নামে। কিন্তু তিনি পরাজিত, বন্দী ও কারারুদ্ধ হন। পরে বিপুল পরিমাণে পণ দিয়ে মুসলমানদের হাত থেকে রেহাই পান। সপ্তম ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধের পর এবং আইয়ুবী বংশীয় শেষ সুলতানের ইনে-কাল ঘটলে দাস বংশীয় শাসকরা প্রায় তিন’শ বছর যাবৎ বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাসসহ সমগ্র অঞ্চলের শাসন কার্য চালান। এদিকে ইসলামী জাহানে আক্রমণকারী একের পর এক দেশ দখলকারী মঙ্গোল বাহিনী বায়তুল মুকাদ্দাস দখলের জন্য সেখানে পৌঁছলে দাস সুলতানদের সাথে লড়াই বাঁধে। লড়াইয়ে দাস বংশের পতন ঘটে এবং আকসায় ফিলিস্তিন বসবাসকারী অবশিষ্ট খৃস্টান ক্রুসেডপন্থীদেরও মূলোৎপাটন হয়ে যায়।
অন্যদিকে মঙ্গোল বাহিনী ও গ্রীকদের সাথে উসমান গাজীর দীর্ঘ লড়াই ও একের পর এক বিজয়াভিযানের পর উসমানী বংশীয় খেলাফত প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। ৭২৭ হিঃ মুতাবিক ১৩২৬ খৃস্টাব্দে উসমান গাজীর মৃত্যু ঘটে। তার বংশধররা একের পর এক শাসন কার্য চালাতে থাকে এবং এরপর সুলতান মুহাম্মদ ফাতেহের পালা আসে। সুলতান মুহাম্মদ ফাতেহ ১৪৫৩ খৃস্টাব্দে মুতাবিক ৮৫৭ হিজরীতে ক্রুসেডারদের শক্তিসামর্থ্যের কেন্দ্র ও পূর্ব রোম সাম্রাজ্যের রাজধানী কনস্টাটিনোপল (ইস্তাম্বুল) জয় করেন এবং খৃস্টান বাহিনীকে ইউরোপের ফটক পর্যন্ত তাড়িয়ে নিয়ে যান। তিনি ইউরোপ, এশিয়া ও আফ্রিকায় তার বিজয়াভিযান অব্যাহত রাখেন। কনস্টান্টিনোপলের বিজয় ছিল ইউরোপের ইতিহাসে এক মোড় পরিবর্তনকারী ঘটনা।
ক্রুসেড যুদ্ধের সময়ে যেমন মুসলমানদের জ্ঞান, বিজ্ঞান ও সভ্যতা ইউরোপে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে তেমনি এ ঘটনার ফলে ইউরোপে মধ্যযুগের অবসান ঘটে এবং রেঁনেসার বিশাল পরিবর্তন শুরু হয়ে যায়। পাঁচশ’ বছর যাবত কনস্টান্টিনোপল উসমানী সাম্রাজ্যের রাজধানী ছিল। এ সময়ে উসমানী খেলাফতের ভেতর শিল্প, সাহিত্য, স্থাপত্য, রাষ্ট্র পরিচালনা, উন্নয়ন, শহর স্থাপন প্রভৃতি ক্ষেত্রে ব্যাপক উন্নতি সাধিত হয়। ইউরোপীয় সরকারগুলো সব সময়ই উসমানীদের ভয়ে ভীত সন্ত্রস- অবস্থায় ছিল।
ইরানে সাফাভী রাজবংশের পত্তন ঘটায় এবং শিয়া মাজহাবকে সরকারী মাজহাব বলে ঘোষণা দেয় এবং ইউরোপীয় সরকারগুলো, বিশেষ করে বৃটেনের প্রকাশ্য ও গোপন চক্রানে- ইরান ও উসমানীদের ভেতর দু’শ বছর মেয়াদী বহু রক্তক্ষয়ী যুদ্ধ অব্যাহত থাকে। উসমানীদের সাথে সন্ধি করার পর ইউরোপ যখন জ্ঞান্তবিজ্ঞান ও সাংস্কৃতিক (রেঁনেসা) আন্দোলনে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে ঠিক তখনি ইসলামী জাহানে বিশাল ও গভীর ফাটল সৃষ্টি হয় এবং মুসলমানদের শক্তি-সামর্থ্য দীর্ঘ ধ্বংসাত্মক যুদ্ধে নষ্ট হয়ে যায়। মুসলমানরা ইসলামী সভ্যতা প্রতিরক্ষা করার বদলে অভ্যন্তরীণ গৃহযুদ্ধ ও মাজহাবী হিংসা-বিদ্বেষে মত্ত হয়।
