"It Ends with Us" was written by Colleen Hoover and was published in 2016. The book has gained new fame thanks to TikTok and booktoks. Which automatically made me think not much of it. But as a book lover I had to know what all the hype was about so I read the book and I was extremely surprised. I don’t think you can use the term good book or bad book when it comes to this book, because it is actually an educational book. It educates reads about abusive relationships.
I know that this book is usually placed in the romantic genre shelves and yeah it does fit there. But unlike most books there, it doesn’t glorify problematic relationship. It warns you to get the hell out of there. Even if on the surface your partner looks like the perfect man.
The book follows Lily. Lily seems to have it all. She made her dream job come true. She moved out of a small town and a bad situation in life and really made something of herself. She is a strong independent woman. Now she has a new man in her life which she loves, but he does not like to date and doesn't want to have a girlfriend. You think this book is about turning a guy who has commitment issues into Mr. Perfect after he meets Ms. Right. It is not. Their relationship is not a healthy one and the book doesn't shy away from it or glorifies it. It doesn't deny that some behaviors are toxic, or makes you think that this is actually romantic, it is a punch to the gut.
Colleen Hoover has a very approachable writing style that is very easygoing and compelling. You read her books without stopping. It is a bit jarring in this case. You think that everything is amazing and it is wrapped in such nice writing and then it all comes crashing down.
I am actually surprised by just how popular this book is. Not some romantic cliché of the genre, but an educational cautionary tale.
