When I first heard of Jadite Glass, I had no idea what the person was talking about. I had never heard of it, and had never seen any either. Once I did see it, I immediately fell in love with it! It is probably my favorite glassware other than Fenton's Cranberry Opalescent glass. It is a Milk Glass that normally you cannot see thru although I've seen some versions be almost transparent. The spelling changes...Jadite, Jade-ite, Jadeite, but they all look the same or at least similar enough to call it the same. The difference in spellings from what I can tell is simply due to different times of release from different manufacturers. McKee made Jade-ite in the 1930s, Anchor Hocking made it again from the 1940s to the 1960s as Jadite, and I'm not sure where the Jadeite without the hyphen came from but it is also an alternate spelling. Color variations do happen and the McKee is a more glowing green colored milk glass than the creamy lighter green milk glass made by Anchor Hocking Fire King glass. This cake plate is in the Candlewick pattern. It has a marbled effect that is Jadite Green glass with white milk glass mixed in making it a whole different kind of jadite but still jadite glass. These I had custom made in China almost 2 years ago and they have been excellent sellers for me. The entire process of importing them was so very interesting. For one, just the language gap, was a real adventure. I am Southern and talk Southern so explaining what Okey Dokey means to a Young Chinese Girl wound up with her telling me Okay Donkey!!! I tried to explain to her the difference but I still was called a Donkey for the remaining duration of our talks. I'm sure some people would agree with her! Then, the import tax. Companies say it's cheaper to import from China, however I spent the same amount on importing as I did on the items themselves. Was it cheaper than the American made version? Yes. It was. However, the American versions are made at much high standards with less manufacturing flaws. When we first got the order, we had to go thru all of them and sort by 1st Quality and 2nds. It was overwhelming at the 2nds and broken items received even though they were packed in Styrofoam molded to the exact shape of the cake plates. These cake plates were my 1st major import. Since then I have also ordered a sample of porcelain signs. The porcelain advertising signs were a much higher quality, however, the minimum order limits and the prices keep going up so much that you can get almost the same item from manufacturers here in the USA at a much faster rate for just a little higher of a price. Will I import again from China? Yes. I probably will. Will it be my main focus? No. I will buy American whenever possible as it's much easier, less stressful and keeps us Americans working.
