Joy Discussion
The movie starts out with an ambitious woman named Joy. Joy lives with her two kids, mother, divorced husband, and father that is just needing a place to stay for the time being. Joy’s mother and father are also divorced so her living situation is not the most ideal. Joy missed out on college and dedicated her life to help out her family. She also put her ideas, thoughts, and goals on stand by for this. Being her dad's accountant for his small business and helping her mom with her problems took up most of her schedule. One day Joy came to her senses and asked for help with her idea. Joy went to her family and asked her dad for his help to propose the idea to his new partner or girlfriend to try to get a loan. Joy drew up mockups of her new invention of a mop. Joy tried to get people interested in buying the mop but just could not do it. After getting told no so many times the average person would stop but not Joy. After talking to some of the right people Joy finally got her product to be advertised but it did not go well. Joy did not stop there she begged to be the one to advertise this product and when she did the product took off. Joy showed an entrepreneurial role by finding a commonly used item and making it better than it was in this case it was a mop. Joy succeeded with this because she was finally seeing profit with the invention and people wanted the product.
Watching this movie Joy, I found a few things that were very interesting to me. The very first thing I recognized was Joy’s ambition and drive to get things done or taken care of. In my opinion, this is why Joy later on succeeds in this movie and with her idea. Joy got told so many times that her idea was not going to work and not make any money but nothing stopped her. She believed in her idea so hard she knew it could go to the next level. She tried just about every way to try and have this product advertised and seen worldwide and her ambition led her to find the right people. The second thing I found very interesting was how well an item can sell if it has a good pitch. In the movie a product pitcher showed her product on tv but did not know how to work the mop. The second time the product was pitched by Joy on live television and she showed the mop to its full potential leading her to get so many orders on the product. Advertising is everything and without an item advertised or pitched right it could lead it spiraling downhill. The third and final thing I found interesting was how well companies are at trying to steal your idea or product. I realized how important it is to get ideas patented if you are wanting to go through with it. Companies try to switch and change things to try and make more money and all they care about is the money. Without a patent Joy would have taken a huge loss.
With a common household item that Joy used everyday she saw an idea that could be way more helpful to her and other people. She realized how much work it can be to mob and having to rinse out the mop by hand and how much easier it would be if you could just throw the mop head in the washer. With Joy’s idea it had a lot of potential because it could make everybody’s everyday chore much easier and cleaner. This example of Joy is an exact example of what we discussed in class and how being an entrepreneur needs to look at things that could make everyday items easier for people to use or more helpful to use. Doing this makes the market very high for the product and customers want to buy products like these because who does not want something that is going to work better and makes things more helpful. The society already has enough troubles and hard days and with products like Joy’s a simple mop that can be rung and washed can cause huge sales. On the other hand, sometimes society does not take it too well. People sometimes do not like to try new things or another way of putting it is why replace something that is not broken. Joy ran into this problem because of a couple reasons. One reason Joy ran into this situation was because of how expensive her product was. Her mop being the most expensive mop on the market is a very hard reason to convince someone to buy it. The other reason Joy ran into was how it was marketed. Society wants to see how products work or in other words how it is going to make their life easier. When the product was finally marketed on television the man marketing it had no idea or clue how it worked leading Joy to get no phone class and purchases. Once Joy marketed her own product and showed television or society how the mop worked she ended up getting numerous phone calls from people wanting to buy her mop. Without a good pitch nobody showed any interest in her mop and Joy would have a business that was not working. When discussing in class, understanding the market is a huge factor of being an entrepreneur. Joy did this by knowing her product could be a very big use to society and knowing that her product would sell once it was marketed right and was pitched properly on how to use the mop. Knowing the market and how something could make things easier for someone is everything when being an entrepreneur and wanting to sell products.
