In 1856 the mountain was discovered by Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas George Montgomerie FRS was a British, and it was given the name K-2 because it was the second peak measured in the Karakoram Range. The name Mount Godwin Austen is for the peak's first surveyor, Col. H.H. Godwin Austen, a 19th-century English geographer.

It is located on the China–Pakistan border between Baltistan, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China. K2 is the highest peak of the Karakoram range and also the highest peak in Pakistan and Xinjiang.

Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen was born in 6 July 1834 and died in 2 December 1923), was an English topographer, naturalist, geologist and surveyor.
He explored the mountains in the Himalayas and surveyed the glaciers at the base of K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen.
