The laws and ways of God are not intended to oppress man but to care for his life.
That is why when the Book of Leviticus begins to explain the scope of the Law of Holiness, which is an extension of the Decalogue received by Moses on Mount Horeb, it gives the following teaching about the true function of all the holy precepts and the divine laws for man: "Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the LORD" Leviticus 18:5. In other words, whoever watches the law in his heart also watches his life; because the Law orders men to superior goods, such as eternal life, and not to the apparent goods such as money.
All human beings have a basic choice regarding whether they live according to God's precepts or not, and thence, man acts according to the psychological drive of life or the psychological drive of death, whether consciously or not. Sin, which is the rupture of man's relationship with God, is serious in itself, but when sins add up, the worst evil of all occurs, which is war. And wars, whatever name they have, are nothing more than a large sum of homicides, since by the will of God men are all brothers among themselves ("Love your neighbor as yourself" Mark 12:31), and wars are the adoration of death in its greatest degree.
All the commandments are summarized according to the Bible in a spiritual teaching very similar to the teaching in Leviticus18:5: "Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13. The spiritual gift of fear of the Lord is the attachment of the human heart to the law, this gift is what defines spirituality in man, the fear of God is constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability). To live this spiritual gift is to obey the Lord and his law, and this is not a matter of opinion but what divides the wise from the foolish, we choose.
