The Gospel of John tells us about the trial of Jesus by Pontius Pilate. Pilate according to the romans laws found no crime in our Lord Jesus, but this roman official committed a very common sin in powerful men, to fear men more than God: "Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to God" Deuteronomy 1:17. According to the Book of Deuteronomy (Deuteronomy 13:5), false prophets must be sentenced to death and this was the accusation made against Jesus by his enemies, the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Finally, after a brief dialogue, Pontius Pilate handed over Jesus to be crucified to satisfy his accusers.
But Jesus, in that spiritual dialogue, spoke to Pontius Pilate about the importance of following the truth, and to perceive that mysterious and eternal Kingdom, that domain or empire of the divine perfections ("Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful" Luke 6:36), which transforms men and society towards the communion and the common good, but as it happened with Nicodemus when he spoke with Jesus at night (John 3:1-21), the word could not be perceived with the heart. In most cases, the hardness of the heart prevents the word of God from taking root, and this is what happened to Pilate.
With these words Jesus spoke with Pontius Pilate according to the Gospel of John:
"Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus, and asked him, ´Are you the king of the Jews?´
´Is that your own idea,´ Jesus asked, ´or did others talk to you about me?´
´Am I a Jew?´ Pilate replied. ´You own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?´
Jesus said, ´My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.´
´You are a king, then!´ said Pilate.
Jesus answered, ´You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.´" John 18:33-37.
