오늘은 bitcoin에 대해 많은 관심을 갖고 계신 분들이 의외로 너무 쉽게 간과하고 있는 부분에 대해서 좀 논해볼까 합니다.
먼저 좀 자극적인 글 제목을 하나 소개해 드리죠.
“Bitcoin is evil” (2013.12)
2008년 노벨 경제학상에 빛나는 Paul Krugman이 뉴욕타임즈에 기고한 글의 제목입니다.
기본적으로 일부 오스트리아 학파 (Austrian school)의 학자들을 제외하면 케인지안이나 통화주의, 시카고 학파의 학자들까지 대부분의 경제학자들은 비슷한 스탠스일 것으로 봐도 될 것으로 생각되므로 Krugman의 다른 글들을 좀 더 살펴보도록 하죠.
같은 뉴욕 타임즈 기고문들을 좀 더 보면
Bitcoin was, of course, created in part to cater to libertarian dreams – to provide a way to store your wealth where governments can’t steal it through taxation or currency debasement.(2014.2)
비트코인은 정부가 세금과 화폐 발행을 통해 자신의 부를 빼앗지 못하게 하고 싶어하는 리버타리안의 꿈을 먹고 생겨났다.
저 주장, 반박하기 어렵네요.
My current guess is that the Bitcoin bubble will collapse when there is some bad news, e.g., a regulator demands registration of Bitcoin wallets, people try and cash out, and find that that while it’s easy to buy bitcoins, it’s much harder to find people willing to buy back nontrivial amounts, very hard to collect the sales proceeds, and completely impossible without revealing exactly who you are.(2013.12)
비트코인 버블은 안 좋은 뉴스들이 나오기 시작하면 터질 것이다.
저 글을 기고한 2013년 12월은 단기간에 수십배의 폭등을 기록했던 시기죠. 그리고 12월은 실제로 버블이 터지기 시작하던 시기였죠. 이미 거품이다 터진다 튤립이다 온갖 얘기가 파다하게 돌던 시기였습니다. 저라도 저런 얘기는 할 수 있었죠. 어쨌든 그 뒤로 가격은 폭락을 했으니 저 당시만 해도 으쓱했을 것 같습니다.
그런데, 다시 bitcoin이 상승세에 들어간 2015년 이후부터 bitcoiner들의 Krugman에 대한 반응은 다음과 같습니다.
huh? 응? Krugman? who? 이 사람?
인터넷이 팩스만도 못할거라고 했던 사람?
그런데, 그는 저 개망신 예언에 대해 다음과 같이 해명했습니다.

Well, two things. First, look at the whole piece. It was a thing for the Times magazine's 100th anniversary, written as if by someone looking back from 2098, so the point was to be fun and provocative, not to engage in careful forecasting; I mean, there are lines in there about St. Petersburg having more skyscrapers than New York, which was not a prediction, just a thought-provoker.
But the main point is that I don't claim any special expertise in technology -- I almost never make technological forecasts, and the only reason there was stuff like that in the 98 piece was because the assignment required that I do that sort of thing.
The issues about Bitcoin, however, are not technological! Everyone agrees that it's technically very sweet. But does it work as money? That's a very different kind of question. And the fact that people are throwing around my 98 quote actually shows that they don't get this point -- that they're confusing technology with monetary economics.
요약하면, 자신은 technology expert가 아니고 원래 technological forecast는 하지 않는데 time megazine 100주년을 기념하여 재밌고 논쟁적인 예언을 한 것이다. (웃자고 한 얘기를 다큐로 받지마라.....?)하지만 그 보다 중요한 얘기는, 인터넷은 그런 스토리지만, 비트코인은 다르다. 화폐경제는 내가 짱이다. (내 말이 맞다!) 이겁니다.
그럼, 그가 경제학자로서 가장 하고 싶었던 얘기는 뭘까요? 사실 같은 칼럼에 2011년에 먼저 했습니다. 잠깐 볼까요?
But does that make the experiment a success? Um, no. What we want from a monetary system isn’t to make people holding money rich; we want it to facilitate transactions and make the economy as a whole rich. And that’s not at all what is happening in Bitcoin. because it shows just how vulnerable such a standard would be to money-hoarding, deflation, and depression.(2011.9)
네, 결국 bitcoin은 hoarder들에 의해 실제 소비로 이루어지지 않고 (유통량이 적고) 그 결과 deflation, depression을 유발하게 되므로 화폐로서는 적절하지 않다는 얘기입니다. 전통적인 화폐 경제학자의 시각을 아주 짧고 명쾌하게 보여줍니다. 역시 노벨상 수상자답습니다.
자 그럼 좀 더 파봐야 되겠죠?
