Regardless of whether we are native speakers or first learning English, most of us would like to and could probably benefit from gaining a better mastery over the language. Having a stronger command over the idiom may help someone improve his or her social status, strengthen their communications skills, quicken their ability to absorb knowledge and, quite possibly, increase their chances of advancing in a given career. How can we accomplish this task? We must improve upon our reading, writing and listening skills. The following are five suggestions on how to accomplish such a feat.
Read As Much And As Often As Possible
It seems simple, but is definitely accurate advice. The more you read, the greater your English skills will become. This is true for a number of reasons. Reading on a consistent basis increases your vocabulary, helps you garner the ability to ingest a larger amount of information over a shorter period of time, teaches you how to spot more important and informative text from less important text and strengthens your ability to absorb lengthier quantities of text over lesser amounts of time. It is recommended everyone devote, at minimum, anywhere from 15 minutes to one half hour to reading each day.
Prepare Yourself To Become A Better Reader
This means establishing good study/work habits. The first step you can take is to examine your individual reading skills and pinpoint areas that might need review or improvement. You should also identify the most optimal environment to do your reading. Everyone responds to distractions in their own way. However, for most people, reading is best done in a place where they will experience the fewest interruptions from television, a computer, their phone or even other individuals. It is also critical to work in a comfortable environment. Make sure your reading room has an adequate light supply and is furnished with ergonomic chairs.
Learn To Write Well
While there are some people who were born with a plethora of writing talent, the truth is it takes significant instruction and a great deal of practice to master the craft. The first step to mastery is actually learning the finer points of the art. This can certainly be done through classroom learning. However, there are numerous writing anthologies available for purchase or rental from your local library that will instruct you on structural techniques designed to show you how to use words more effectively and present your thoughts in a more succinct, readable manner.
Edit And Rewrite Old Work
With each piece you author, your work will improve. A key to improving as a writer is the editing process. Gather your old work, apply the techniques you have learned and gradually you will notice that what you create will get better and better.
Actually Listen To What A Public Speaker Is Saying
Quite often, people do not offer public speakers their undivided attention. This is a serious mistake. Orators speak publicly, not only for their knowledge of a given topic, but also because of the clear and concise way in which they share this information with an audience. By focusing on how public speakers use language, we all can become more effective communicators.
