The Bible tells in the Second Book of Chronicles that Rehoboam ruled the Kingdom of Judah as the successor of Solomon, and as King, Rehoboam acted like a true fool and made the entire nation sin with him, and as a consequence of this Rehoboam suffered one of the curses prescribed in the Book of Deuteronomy by Moses:
"The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven, and you will become a thing of horror to all the kingdoms on earth" Deuteronomy 28:25.
A curse that was fulfilled with the invasion of Shishak, king of Egypt, on the Kingdom of Judah. The period of peace that Solomon's wisdom had brought had been forgotten and a new era of wars was approaching as a consequence of the forgetting of the law of the Lord. With these facts, the Bible highlighted the importance of the blessing of peace, and how this spiritual good is a product of the fidelity to the law united with the fear of God (devotion, equanimity, and stability).
And with the invasion of Shishak, the prophet Shemaiah intervened, who informed the King of Judah that Shishak was acting as God's punishment for Judah's infidelity, and so the prophet communicated the word of God to the king and the leaders of Judah: "You have abandoned me; therefore, I now abandon you to Shishak" 2 Chronicles 12:5.
But then the Bible continued with its story and explained that God found something good in Judah because all the leaders of the country along with their King humbled themselves before God.
And so through the words of the prophet, God instructed Rehoboam and his court on the importance of the fidelity to the law:
"When the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, this word of the LORD came to Shemaiah: ´Since they have humbled themselves, I will not destroy them but will soon give them deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak. They will, however, become subject to him, so that they may learn the difference between serving me and serving the kings of other lands" 2 Chronicles 12:7-8.
