I remember (vaguely, like all memories at my age) an aphorism that cautions against becoming the monsters we oppose. I have seen the effect happen more than once in my life, and it's devastating to discover one has so departed from one's principles while intending to uphold them.
Such mechanism seems particularly appropriate regarding US history, and the more recent the history, the more appropriate it seems. Who can forget Bush 43 opining 'They hate us for our freedoms.' while doing everything that he did to destroy American freedom?
I confess that I am poorly familiar with the internal functioning of institutions. From my earliest youth, institutions have been my monster, my windmill to tilt at, and I have eschewed them as much as I am able. Jim Cantrell has dove right in.
