Scientists predict the inevitability of climate catastrophe
Even with the Paris Agreement, according to which the average temperature on Earth should not rise by more than 1.5 degrees, climate change remains dangerous for a number of vulnerable regions, including the Arctic and monsoon areas. This conclusion was made by scientists of the Open University and Sheffield University in the UK. Their article is published in the journal Nature Climate Change. This is reported in a press release on Phys.org.
Some experts have questioned the feasibility of efforts to curb the rise in temperature, given that the Earth has already warmed up by one degree, as well as the fact that warming is “delayed” by the ocean. However, other scientists believe that reducing greenhouse gas emissions can prevent a "delayed" rise in temperature.
The researchers developed a climate model that takes into account the interaction of the ocean and the atmosphere, the carbon cycle and the amount of carbon dioxide emissions, and estimated the likelihood of reaching the Paris Agreement, as well as its effects on the biosphere. It turned out that limiting temperature growth is technically achievable even without excessive restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions with a 50 percent probability. However, in this case, the associated climate change may be unpredictable for some areas of the Earth, where the frequency of weather disasters may increase.
On June 8, it was reported that climatologists of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that increasing the global temperature by even 1.5 degrees Celsius will lead to serious climate change, the disappearance of natural ecosystems and the extinction of many species. According to calculations, if the warming trend continues by the year 2100, coastal megacities will be flooded and some inhabited islands will disappear, including the Maldives.
