Is spirituality and religion supporting the evolution of humanity to move forward , or is spirituality and religion holding us back?
I distinguish spirituality and religion as two different forces; one moving humanity forward and the other holding humanity back.
Religion and there respective institutions has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, thus holding humanity back from growth. Now, religions divide humanity despite the face that the majority of religions share the same fundamental truth of the existence of a higher power. They may call the higher power a different name (God, Buddha, Mohammed, Allah, Science], but the nature of each religion shares fundamental commonalities. Initially, the purpose of religion was to provide humans with a sense of purpose, a reason to endure, and a community for social belonging and interaction. Religion was meant to unify populations as a tool for humanity of its path of enlightenment. Now, religion is used to unify populations against each other holding humanity back from progressing.
Unlike religion, spirituality is supporting the evolution of humanity’s enlightenment into a place of universal respect and love. Spirituality means something different for each individual and evolves each individual at a different pace. As a result, humanity collectively evolves forward as each individual moves along his or her path of enlightenment.
The two most important days in one’s life is (1) the day one is born and (2) the day you find out why. Spirituality is the process between these two points. It strips you of societal norms, stereotypes & prejudices, and programmed behavior learned during youth and adolescence and allows you to grow through the lessons of love, respect, and unity. The sense of purpose found extrinsically in religion is instilled intrinsically with spirituality.

With humanity unified with a collective sense of purpose through spirituality, there is only direction for humanity to move: FORWARD
