Watching this video earlier today about which martial art works best for self defense, it was interesting that before this ex-Navy SEAL even started talking about fighting forms he mentioned:
If you're talking about true self defense to protect yourself from other evil human beings in the world, it's a gun; and it's concealed carry.
Those considering learning a martial art for self defense should take this advice seriously. Learning how to fight is always a good idea, and it's generally an awesome workout to stay in fighting shape, but hands down the most effective way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and those around you is to carry a gun.
If you choose to carry, take the responsibility to heart, train often and train seriously. Standing still and shooting at a stationary paper target at the range is OK, but also get tactical training, practice dry draw and shoot drills over and over until it's muscle memory, and think through a variety of likely scenarios where you might be forced to act.
That box checked, it seems that jiu jitsu is the style of choice for raw utility, followed by boxing for punching skills, muy thai for sparring, wrestling for ground game, and krav maga as a supplement.
What other recommendations on fighting styles or thoughts on carry do you have?
