Joe Rogan interviews Johann Hari, author of the book, "Lost Connections" in which he uncovers the real causes of depression and the unexpected solutions. Johann Hari suffered from depression as a child and by his teens was on anti-depressants throughout his teen years and was told his depression was due to a "chemical imbalance" in his brain. By the time he was an adult, still on anti-depressants, he began a 40,000 mile journey of discovery around the world searching out social scientists who were finding that depression and anxiety were not the product of a chemical imbalance in the brain, but were, in fact, symptomatic of the degree of dysfunctionality of our culture and how we live.
"But a key point I make in Lost Connections is that it shouldn’t be left only to depressed people to solve the problem of depression. We don’t say that the problem of road accidents can only be solved by people bleeding from car crashes. It’s the job of all of us – depressed and not-depressed – to come together to challenge the causes of depression that have been rising all around us. In the medium to long term, the best way for all of us to get help is by coming together to make these targeted changes to the way we are currently living.".....Johann Hari
‘If you have ever been down, or felt lost, this amazing book will change your life. Do yourself a favour – read it now’
– ELTON JOHN
‘Wise, probing and deeply generous Hari has produced a book packed with explosive revelations about our epidemic of despair. Yes, this work is about depression but it is also about the way we live now – and the havoc perennial isolation is wreaking on our collective mental health and general wellbeing. I am utterly convinced that the more people read this book, the better off the world will be’
– NAOMI KLEIN, AUTHOR OF ‘THE SHOCK DOCTRINE’
‘Like a secular oracle Johann Hari stands on the periphery observing what is coming. This book is a prescient and compassionate Rosetta Stone for those trying to understand mental illness. Beautiful.’
– RUSSELL BRAND
‘This is one of those extraordinary books that you want all your friends to read immediately – because the shift in world-view is so compelling and dramatic that you wonder how you’ll be able to have conversations with them otherwise. A highly personal book, written with humility, humour and candour, it nonetheless heralds a crucial new discussion about our mental health – and the health of the world we’ve created for ourselves. I haven’t been so gripped for ages … I honestly couldn’t put it down. What a stunning piece of work’
