There is a universal scape goat, that most people will use to explain poor behaviour or the diseaset that resulted from they're choices. It is either genetic or all in your head.
I would have no problem with this if it would be true, but there is often no evidence to prove such.
Whenever a scapegoat is used, you completely avoid personal or collective responsibility. After all you are blaming your issue on two things over which you have very little understanding or control.
Evritime I speak with someone who uses these two excuses. I imagine that the direct translation of it is: no matter what do you do don't pay attention to the envioutnmen, there is nothing wrong with that, nothing you can do about it!
Your instincts are perfectly functional, is just so that they were designed to work in nature not the artificial world that we live in.
To that extent there is very little self-sabotaging behaviour in nature.
Most poor decisions today are the result of social engineering. For example if you go to a supermarket, there is a very specific reason why every supermarket you ever set foot into is organized the same.
The fruits and vegetables are always first at the entry so you would buy thoes first to don't have any guilt later when you reach over to the processed foods. This makes it more likely to buy unhealthy expensive packaged foods.
The supermarket is basically a mine field that is trying to make you take some poor decisions with any opportunity they have.
I am not saying that you don't have any free will, not all your trips to the store end up with you buying something unnecessary or unhealthy.
But I think is safe to assume that evribody gets tricked at least once in a while.
To make things worse we also bring objects into our homes that are designed to encourage you to make horrible decisions. Like your smartphone for example.
By bringing this objects into your house you are basically allowing the social engineers to design your house.
You end up living in a place that encourage you and facilitate you to self destruct, rather than nurture you.
I found a lot of my self destructive behaviour gone just by either avoiding complitly certain places and objects, or whenever that wasn't possible at least minimizing my exposure to them.
