Here is a perfect example of why Amazon is taking over brick-and-mortar business
This can be summarized in a story:
I needed some 8.5 x 11 labels for some package. While I was out and about running errands, I stopped by Office Depot. While there, I saw this:
It's a 100 pack of 8.5 x 11 labels, just what I was looking for. But $37 seemed a bit expensive for sticky paper.
Should I just buy it or...
What do I do, standing in the isle at Office Depot? I whip out my phone, check amazon and found this:
560 reviews, 4.5 stars, exactly the same product, + 10 extra sheets of paper. It's only $13 (!!!). Oh and free 2nd day shipping and when I use my Amazon card, I get 5% back as an Amazon Credit. ($0.65)
If this isn't enough reason to NOT buy from Office Depot and go home and wait less than 48 hours for the product to arrive at my door, I don't know what is!
Comparison Per Sheet
At Office Depot the total with tax would be $36.99 + $2.22 MI sales tax = $39.21 / 100 sheets = $0.39 per sheet
The Amazon Prime version came to a total of $12.95 - $0.65) = $12.30 / 110 = $0.11 per sheet
I got these on Amazon for less than 1/3rd the price per sheet!
So given the choice between $0.11 per sheet and $0.39 per sheet, I'll take the dime and penny version - thank you very much.
So this is the future of retail - people walking into brick-and-mortar stores, looking at the items and checking out comparable products on Amazon Prime to see if they can get a better deal. I sure did.
For the price of waiting 48 hours at home for delivery, I'm receiving the same quality product delivered to my door at 1/3rd the price. This saves the company money and it could have saved me some time heading out to the store.
I didn't buy it at Office Depot
I put the 100 pack box back on the shelf and walked towards the door. I had already purchased the Amazon version with a few taps on my phone. Feeling a little bad walking in and not purchasing anything, I grabbed a hand sanitzer bottle in the checkout for a dollar. They got my business after all!
