The literal meaning of the Paryushan- Festival is - to be absorbed in the soul. The word paryushan is derived from the word prefix and vase of metal, in which it is pronounced.
Paryushan means 'to live in harmony-living whole life' - One meaning of paryurshan is to destroy the deeds. Only the active enemies will be destroyed, then the soul will be in its form, hence this Paryushan-Festival gives inspiration to reside in the soul of the soul.
Lord Mahavir lived a life of forgiveness or peace. Regardless of whatever circumstance they have come, remain equally in all situations.
Lord Mahavira said - '' मित्ती में सव्व भूएसु, वेरंमज्झण केणइ '' means my friendship with all the beings, there is no hostility to anyone. Human unity, peaceful coexistence, friendship, exploitationless socialism, establishment of international moral values, nonviolent life, support of the worship style of the soul, etc. Elements are the main basis of the Purushottam Mahaprabhu. In view of this, this element can be a part of the life of the people, in view of this, the Mahaparav is expected to make efforts to make the festival of the people.
पर्युषण पर्व का शाब्दिक अर्थ है- आत्मा में समा जाना । पर्युषण शब्द परि उपसर्ग व वस् धातु इसमें अन् प्रत्यय लगने से पर्युषण शब्द बनता है।
पर्युषण यानी 'परिसमन्तात-समग्रतया उषणं वसनं निवासं करणं'- पर्युषण का एक अर्थ है- कर्मों का नाश करना।
कर्मरूपी शत्रुओं का नाश होगा तभी आत्मा अपने स्वरूप में अवस्थित होगी अत: यह पर्युषण-पर्व आत्मा का आत्मा में निवास करने की प्रेरणा देता है।
भगवान महावीर ने क्षमा यानी समता का जीवन जीया। वे चाहे कैसी भी परिस्थिति आई हो, सभी परिस्थितियों में सम रहे।
भगवान महावीर ने कहा- 'मित्ती में सव्व भूएसु, वेरंमज्झण केणइ' अर्थात सभी प्राणियों के साथ मेरी मैत्री है, किसी के साथ वैर नहीं है। मानवीय एकता, शांतिपूर्ण सह-अस्तित्व, मैत्री, शोषणविहीन सामाजिकता, अंतरराष्ट्रीय नैतिक मूल्यों की स्थापना, अहिंसक जीवन आत्मा की उपासना शैली का समर्थन आदि तत्व पर्युषण महापर्व के मुख्य आधार हैं। ये तत्व जन-जन के जीवन का अंग बन सके, इस दृष्टि से इस महापर्व को जन-जन का पर्व बनाने के प्रयासों की अपेक्षा है।

'क्षमा वीरो का भूषण है'- महान व्यक्ति ही क्षमा ले व दे सकते हैं। पर्युषण पर्व आदान-प्रदान का पर्व है। इस दिन सभी अपनी मन की उलझी हुईं ग्रंथियों को सुलझाते हैं, अपने भीतर की राग-द्वेष की गांठों को खोलते हैं, वे एक-दूसरे से गले मिलते हैं, पूर्व में हुई भूलों को क्षमा के द्वारा समाप्त करते हैं व जीवन को पवित्र बनाते हैं। पर्युषण महापर्व का समापन मैत्री दिवस के रूप में आयोजित होता है, जिसे 'क्षमापना दिवस' भी कहा जाता है। इस तरह से पर्युषण महापर्व एवं क्षमापना दिवस- ये एक-दूसरे को निकटता में लाने का पर्व है। यह एक-दूसरे को अपने ही समान समझने का पर्व है।
पर्युषण महापर्व आध्यात्मिक पर्व है। इसका जो केंद्रीय तत्व है, वह है आत्मा। आत्मा के निरामय, ज्योतिर्मय स्वरूप को प्रकट करने में पर्युषण महापर्व अहं भूमिका निभाता रहता है। यह पर्व मानव-मानव को जोड़ने व मानव हृदय को संशोधित करने का पर्व है। यह मन की खिड़कियों, रोशनदानों व दरवाजों को खोलने का पर्व है।
गीता में भी कहा गया है- 'आत्मौपम्येन सर्वत्र:, समे पश्यति योर्जुन'। श्रीकृष्ण ने अर्जुन से कहा- 'हे अर्जुन ! प्राणीमात्र को अपने तुल्य समझो।'
