साधना में चरित्र का महत्त्व - भाग # १ (Importance of Character in Sadhana - Part# 1)
“संसार में संपत्ति का नाश चिन्ता का विषय नहीं, स्वास्थ्य हानि कुछ चिन्तनीय है, किन्तु चरित्रनाश सर्वनाश है ।” अंग्रेजी की इस उक्ति में उपर्युक्त भाव प्रकट किया गया है । पाश्चात्य संस्कृति में भी चरित्र की हानि सबसे बड़ी हानि समझी गई है । इसे अपूरणीय क्षति माना गया है । भारतीय दर्शन, संस्कृति व जीवन धारा तो यम, नियम, योग, तापस व्रत्ति, ब्रह्मचर्यं और सदाचार आदि पर आधारित है । भोग में लिप्त होकर मानव एक ऐसे दल-दल में फंस जाता है जहां से निकलना असम्भव हो जाता है । तृप्ति की मृग-मरीचिका बन जाती है । परिणाम यह होता है कि –
“भोगा ना भुक्ता वयमेव भुक्ता:” अथार्त भोग भोगने के चक्कर में एक दिन हम स्वयं ही भोज्य बनकर जीवन से हाथ धो बैठते हैं । भोग यहीं रह जाते हैं । यह कभी न अन्त होने वाली भूख है और यदि इस भूख की तृप्ति की ओर ही सदा ही प्रयत्नशील रहे तो जीवन-लीला एक दिन समाप्त हो जाएगी । भोगों का अन्त नहीं होगा । भोग यहीं छूट जाएंगे । वे यथावत बने रहेंगे । जीवन में मानव अपना उत्कर्ष नहीं कर पाएगा । इस प्रकार यदि मानव भी मात्र खाना, पीना, सोना आदि ही अपने जीवन का उद्देश्य बनाकर रह जाएगा तो मानव और पशु में कोई अन्तर नहीं रहेगा । क्योंकि मानव जीवन उन्नत जीवन है । इसमें कला, संस्कृति, विज्ञान कर्म आदि अनेक क्षेत्र हैं जो मानव की साधना के सुपरिणाम हैं । सतत् मानव प्रयासों से इनकी गति आगे बढ़ती है और नवीन सम्भावनाएं पैदा होती हैं तथा जीवन धारा निरंतर उन्नति की ओर अग्रसर होती रहती है । भारतीय विचारधारा भोगों से दूर रहकर जीवन को उन्नत बनाने पर बल देती है । इसलिए संयम और चारित्रिक दृढ़ता अनिवार्य मानी गई है ।
वस्तुतः चरित्र में जीवन की समस्त अच्छाईयां सन्निहित हैं किन्तु कामवासना पर नियंत्रण प्रमुख है । काम वृति मानव की मूल प्रवृति है । जीवन में अन्य समस्त वृतियों से यह प्रबलतम है । चरित्र में यही प्रमुख है । इस पर नियन्त्रण कठिन है । ऋषि-मुनियों के सरल जीवन और उच्चादर्शोंमुख सद्वृत्तियों ने इस पर सफल नियंत्रण स्थापित किया । यह एक योग साधना है । कठिन तपस्या है जो कि सबके लिए सुकर नहीं है ।
गृहस्त जीवन में सीमित प्रवाह देकर इसे सबके लिए सरल और सुग्राह्म बना दिया गया । और ‘एक नारी ब्रह्मचारी’ मान लिया गया । अपनी स्त्री के अतिरिक्त अन्यत्र भोग निषिद्ध ही नहीं, पाप मान लिया गया । चारित्रिक कलंक बताया गया है । भोगी मानव समाज में निंदनीय होता है । समाज में उसका सम्मान नहीं होता । सभ्य उसके पास बैठना नहीं चाहता । सभी उससे दूर रहते हैं । वह कभी आदरणीय नहीं हो सकता । रावण ब्राह्मण था । बहुत बड़ा विद्वान था । बहुत ज्ञानी पुरुष था । यहां तक कि राम ने भी अनुज लक्ष्मण से रावण के अन्त समय में उसके पास जाकर उपदेश ग्रहण करने के लिए कहा था । इतना बड़ा विद्वान कि शत्रु राम भी उसकी विद्वता का कायल था, संसार में आदरणीय नहीं हो सका । क्योंकि उसने स्त्री की ओर कुदृष्टि डाली । वह निंदनीय माना गया । आज तक उसे घृणा की दृष्टि से देखा जाता है । उसके समस्त गुणों और विद्वता पर पानी फिर गया । क्योंकि ‘मातृवत परदारेषु’ अर्थात् पर-स्त्री में अपनी माता की-सी दृष्टि रखनी चाहिए ।
