पिछली दो पोस्टों से आगे बढ़ते हुए, आज हम प्रेम के महत्त्व को एक उदाहरण से समझने का प्रयत्न करेंगे ।
गुजरात के किसी ग्राम की एक कथा है । एक छोटी-सी बालिका अनाथ हो गई । कौन उसका लालन-पालन करे ? स्वार्थमय संसार में कौन इतना विचार करे कि एक अनाथ बालिका को किसी का आश्रय चाहिए, किसी का प्रेम चाहिए । किन्तु उस बालिका की कोई एक काकी थी, उनका नाम था वसुमती बालिका का नाम था पल्ली ।
वसुमती के ह्रदय में परमात्मा प्रेम का रूप धारण करके बसते थे । अर्थात वसुमती की आत्मा पवित्र थी, प्रेममय थी । उसने उस बालिका को अपने छाती से लगा लिया और अपनी ही सन्तान की भांति उसको पालने लगी ।
पल्ली बड़ी सुन्दर, बड़ी गुणवती बालिका बनी । अपनी काकी वसुमती को वह अपनी माता ही मानती, उसकी सेवा सम्पूर्ण ह्रदय से करती । इस प्रकार प्रेम के सूत्र में बंधे उनके दिन आनन्द से व्यतीत हो रहे थे ।
किन्तु ईर्ष्या को जिसने अपने ह्रदय में स्थान दे रखा था और प्रेम के आनंदमय स्वरूप को जो नहीं जानती थी, ऐसी एक पड़ोसिन थी वनिता बहन । उसे काकी-भतीजी का यह प्रेम कांटे की तरह खटकता था । वह दिन-रात इसी चिन्ता में लिप्त रहती थी कि किसी प्रकार इनकी प्रेम-वाटिका में विष का बीज बो दिया जाए । किन्तु उसका कोई वश चल नहीं रहा था ।
वसुमती के अपनी कोई सन्तान नहीं थी । वह तो पराई सन्तान को ही अपने मातृ-ह्रदय का सम्पूर्ण प्रेम प्रदान कर रही थी । अब इसे चाहे यह कहा जाए कि उसने पराई सन्तान के प्रति सच्चा मातृत्व प्रदर्शन किया इसलिए उसका सच्चा मातृत्व प्रकट हो गया अथवा यह कहा जाए कि उसके प्रेम से प्रभु संतुष्ट हुए, किन्तु परिणाम यह हुआ कि स्वयं वसुमती के गर्भ से एक पुत्र रत्न ने जन्म लिया ।
वसुमती के हर्ष का कोई आर, न कोई पार । अपने पुत्र मयूर तथा भतीजी पल्ली को वह अपनी आँखों के तारे की तरह प्रेम से पालने लगी ।
अब ईर्ष्या तथा प्रेम का द्वंद्व देखिए –
पड़ोसी वनिता अवसर की तलाश में रहती कि किस प्रकार वसुमती का प्रेम खण्डित किया जाए । पल्ली की बुराई में वह अनेक बातें वसुमती से कहा करती, किन्तु वसुमती के ह्रदय में तो प्रेम का निवास था, वह भला वनिता की क्यों सुनती ?
एक दिन मयूर तथा पल्ली वनिता के घर खेल रहे थे । खेलते-खेलते मयूर किसी दीवार पर चढ़ गया । बालक ही तो था, पैर फिसला, वह नीचे गिर गया । सिर में बड़ी चोट लगी । पल्ली ने मयूर को बचाने का बहुत प्रयत्न किया था किन्तु वह भी छोटी बालिका थी, बचा न सकी, स्वयं उसे भी कुछ चोट लगी ।
अब ईर्ष्यालु वनिता को अवसर हाथ लगा । दौड़ी-दौड़ी वसुमती के पास जाकर बोली – “पल्ली राक्षसी है, वह तुम्हारे पुत्र मयूर से ईर्ष्या करती है । और उसे मार डालना चाहती है । उसने मयूर को दीवार से गिरा दिया है, मयूर का सिर फट गया है ।”
वसुमती दौड़ी गई, मयूर को सम्भाला, पल्ली को बुरा-भला कहा ।
इस प्रकार वनिता ने विष का बीज आखिर वसुमती के ह्रदय में बो ही दिया ।
फिर कुछ समय बाद मयूर के जन्म-दिवस पर अड़ोसी-पड़ोसी आए । सब प्रसन्न थे । पल्ली मयूर को प्रसन्न करने में कोई कसर रखती ही नहीं थी । किसी ने उसे चाकलेट का एक डिब्बा दिया, उसने वह डिब्बा मयूर को दे दिया और बगीचे में दोनों बालक खेलने लगे ।
उसी समय ईर्ष्यालु वनिता का पुत्र अशोक उधर आ गया । चाकलेट का डिब्बा देखकर उस पर झपट पड़ा । पल्ली ने उसे डिब्बा नहीं लेने दिया, मयूर को डिब्बा देकर वह उसे घर के भीतर लाने लगी । अशोक ने एक पत्थर उठाकर मयूर के सिर पर दे मारा । पल्ली ने तेजी से मयूर को अपनी ओट में लेकर पत्थर का प्रहार अपने सिर पर झेल लिया । उसका सिर फट गया ।
शोर मचा ! वनिता ने सारा दोष पल्ली के ही माथे मढ़ने का खूब प्रयत्न किया । किन्तु सत्य के सामने असत्य कब तक टिक पाया है ? प्रेम के सामने ईर्ष्या और घृणा का टिक सकना कब तक सम्भव है ।
सच्ची बात प्रकट हुई । पल्ली के शुद्ध प्रेम की प्रशंसा में अड़ोसी-पड़ोसी वाह-वाह कर उठे । वनिता की ईर्ष्यालुता का भंड़ाफोड़ हुआ । वसुमती ने पल्ली को ह्रदय से लगा लिया और उस पर आशीर्वादों को झड़ी लगा दी ।
वनिता भी अन्त में वसुमती के पैरों में गिर पड़ी और बोली – “बहन ! मुझे क्षमा करो । मैं आरम्भ से तुम्हारे और पल्ली के प्रेम को देखकर जलती रहती थी । झूठी-झूठी बातें कहकर तुम्हें उकसाती थी । अब जीवन में कभी ऐसा पाप नहीं करुँगी । तुम्हारा प्रेम धन्य है । तुम्हारे प्रेम ने मेरी आँखें खोल दी हैं । मुझ पापिन का भी उद्धार कर दिया है ।”
प्रेम की विजय का यह छोटा-सा दृष्टान्त है । इस प्रकार के दृष्टान्त समाज के जीवन में यत्र-तत्र बिखरे पड़े हैं । इन दृष्टान्तों से हम मार्ग-दर्शन प्राप्त कर सकते हैं ।
जीवन अमूल्य है । जीवन का लक्ष्य मार्ग भौतिक समृद्धि तथा शक्ति ही नहीं है । कितनी भी शक्ति हो, ज्ञान प्रेम तथा मैत्री भाव के अभाव में मनुष्य निर्गुण ही रह जाता है । विज्ञान में बड़ी शक्ति है, किन्तु प्रेम की भावना से शून्य होने पर वह सृष्टि के विनाश का ही कारण बन जाता है । अत: हमें अपने मस्तिष्क में ज्ञान, ह्रदय में प्रेम तथा शरीर में शक्ति को स्थान देकर जीवन को संतुलित बनाना चाहिए । हमारे व्यक्तित्व का विकास इसी आधार पर सम्भव है ।
मकड़ी जाल बुनती है अन्य जीवों को उसमें फंसाने के लिए । किन्तु वह स्वयं भी अपनी प्रवृति से उस जाल में फंस जाती है । इसी प्रकार जीव भी राग-द्वेष रूपी प्रवृति से स्वयं को कर्म पुद्गलों के भीषण जाल में फंसा लेता है । अत: विवेकवान मानव को चाहिए कि वह भला और बुरा सब कुछ देखे, उस पर विचार करे, किन्तु उसमें लिप्त न हो, उनके प्रति राग अथवा द्वेष, किसी भी प्रकार का भाव न लाए ।
आज का युग बड़ा विषम है । स्वार्थ की भावना ने मनुष्य समाज को रसातल में भेज देने की तैयारी कर ली है । ऐसे समय में हमें गम्भीरतापूर्वक विचार करना चाहिए और स्वार्थ की भावना से ऊपर उठकर सच्चे प्रेममय जीवन की ओर बढ़ना चाहिए । यदि हम निस्वार्थ और शुद्ध प्रेम की महिमा को पहचानेंगे तो हमारे अपने जीवन की समस्त विषमताएं तो दूर हो ही जाएंगी, सम्पूर्ण मानवता का भी कल्याण होगा ।
