RAC...
Also known as the reticular activating system.
It's the part of your brain that is responsible for processing the IMMENSE amount of information that our senses take in,
and...
getting rid of the extraneous information while feeding your consciousness the tiny amount that we need to function and survive.
Let's take a step back.
In my last post we covered the brain.
the brain can process billions of bits of data per second (11 billion to be exact), while the conscious mind can handle a meager 50!
How do we choose which information is important to our perception??
That, my friends, is where the RAC comes into play. Read more
Using our focus, and our preset behavioral patterns it filters through all of our available sensory information and shares just the important stuff.
This may be what causes the confirmation bias, a tendency to search out information that supports your underlying beliefs.
Let me give you a real world example.
Say you are having an argument with friends on social media about which Lord of the Rings movie is the best. You want to provide evidence that "The Two Towers" is by far the best of the trilogy.
You take to google, and search
lord of the rings two towers best movie
Of course you would find evidence that your favorite is indeed the crowds choice.
The RAC takes takes pieces of data
from all of your sense organs, chooses the most relevant information and compiles it into your perception of reality.
The RAC controls HOW you perceive reality.
It does this based off two main things
- what you are looking for
- what you expect to perceive
The first part is quite harmless ... it's the second part that really gets us into trouble.
Say you have a limiting belief ... maybe you think you are unworthy of love.
If you believe this strongly enough your RAC will search for evidence to confirm this belief.
Everywhere you look you will see evidence of this. It doesn't mean that you are unworthy of love, but it will surely seem like it.
When you realize how important your belief patterns are you begin to have a desire to control them.
What if you only perceived things that were supportive and empowering to you.
You have that power!

reality is what you make it
Some people may call you delusional but the FACT is that we are all perceiving a MINUSCULE amount of information available to us. You get to choose what things you perceive. You can see the best of the world or the worst of the world. When you begin to choose the things you perceive you begin to take control of your reality. This is not an argument to deny reality, but rather to craft your own. We exist as bumbling apes, perceiving a minuscule amount of the sensory energy around us. To claim that our perception is reality is nothing but sheer naivety and arrogance. Reality is what you perceive it to be.
Which world would you rather live in??
in my next post I will cover the RAC in more detail and discuss how we can begin shifting our perception, changing our beliefs and intentionally influencing what the brain perceives.
I create these posts to help individuals learn about themselves and life.
My goal is to share this wisdom openly with everyone. Any support offered is greatly appreciated.
