Every person is a puzzle. Some are missing a few jigsaw pieces; others are missing almost everything. But each and every person can be harvested to construct a totus anima mea, or "whole soul," which provides everlasting life to whomever possesses it. You travel across the country every year murdering strangers and collecting souls with specific traits in the hopes of one day becoming an immortal. You are an amateur at best, but you enjoy the annual road trip as well as the people you meet along the way. On your most recent journey, you bump into an enchantress working at a diner who is on the same mission. As you talk, you get the sense that a whole soul is almost within her grasp. Eventually she mentions that all she needs is one last jigsaw piece contained within a soul that only a soul harvester can possess. You run for the door. The only soul harvester she knows is at the diner vomiting, and she needs help. As you walk through the kitchen, you notice the peaceful, kind waitress of the diner. She has her cat on her lap, which pirouettes as she stares into space. You enter the diner and witness a most troubling sight. The waitress appears to be totally grounded and lifeless, not responding to you at all. You must take her soul but you worry that it is too late. If she is in fact no longer her natural previous self, then you will never harvest it. There will only be one soul left and all others will be forever lost and nonexistent. But if the waitress is still alive, then you must do what you do best: sustain life by taking wholes. As you stare at her, she shifts suddenly and catches you off guard, standing up and smiling. She speaks. "What's going on here? Aren't you familiar with the name Colette? Wait a minute--you scared me! My name is Colette! Oh dear! What a rude one you are! I was just sitting here having a lovely chat with you and then you just scoot right past me! Caught me off guard there, boy! You almost had my soul! I can tell." This creature before you is nothing like the waitress whom you met before. Her hair is disheveled and she has no idea who you are. She has no memory of you or of any previous encounter. She has no soul. You have walked into the middle of a very strange scenario. There is no soul. Thus there can be only one. You are willing to continue this charade because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. "I'm glad to see you awake, Colette. I'm sure you remember me." She seems to finally regain her composure, revealing she remembers all. She motions for you to take a seat and the waitress returns with a tray of food. Colette smiles. "I was just having a lovely conversation with this fine young man. He used to come in here every Saturday night. So handsome, you see." "You used to bring me food every Saturday night, Colette. Thank you for being so kind to me." "Well, I could never turn down a soul harvester now could I? Especially one such as yourself. I'm very glad you came. We have a matter of business to attend to, you and I." The waitress brings you your food, unsolicited. She examines you now as if you are nothing more than some passing stranger, and turns to attend to other customers. You pause to reflect on what Colette said to you.
