I shot this grasshopper in Florida in 2011 with my Canon 7D and 100mm macro lens using the stacked images method.
This kind on grasshopper is called eastern lubber grasshopper or just lubber grasshopper (scientific name Romalea microptera). They are common in the southeastern United States. They can each 3 inches. In some cultures people eat grasshoppers, but don't eat this one because it's toxic. It can't kill humans but you will be sick. They do kill small birds if ingested.
