Memetic Trojans
Memes are the cultural titbits that wander around the memeshpere, the collective cultural atmosphere of these information. Usually the label meme go for the internet image macros which contain a picture and some writings on it, mostly funny ones. They are also memes. A piece of music can be a meme. An artwork, news, a quote or couplet of a poem. Whatever information that capable of getting transmitted through minds are memes. They spread through minds, taking copies. It can be as small as a phrase and as big as legends. The funny internet image macros are well suited for this label that they spread easily. They become 'viral' That's why they are well known as 'meme' icons.
Wherever there is a transaction, there is a possibility of exploitation. Same here. The memes can infect the mental activities on there stride from mind to mind; like ideas, believes, morale, behavior, etc. In the book 'Viruses of The Mind' (Richard Dawkins)¹, it mentions how religion spread as a meme infecting the minds like a virus. There it is used a metaphor of computer viruses and termed this phenomena 'Information epidemiology'.
Here we can discuss about Trojan attacks on the realm of memetics. How this tactic of Trojan attack used is quite intriguing. They deploy their memetic piece of information hidden inside another meme just like the warriors hidden inside Trojan horse. This memetic trojan horse enter the mind without any potential resistance against it. Because it is a meme which the victim accept or crave for. Real threat is the meme inside that meme. They passed all the firewalls and found the target. They can run through walls. Now they start their malevolent activities or wait for the other platoons to arrive.
This attack is everywhere. But to be specific, we can take an example from the posts on social media. Since internet and social media is the new breeding ground of memes. You identify this from the posts of a biased or extreme person of some ideology. The person takes a contemporary hot news and shares it in his/her words, but shove his ideologies or politics inside. People who are aware of this practice can identify it easily. But those who having weak defense mechanism falls through. The virus is upon them.
Creating a Trojan is easy. Take a contemporary hot news and imbed the malmeme (like malware) you want to spread. If you are handy with words and you know how to blend ideas, there you go. Most of them people do this intentionally that they want to spread their ideologies/politics. But sometimes it happens not on purpose. The author/creator creates just a meme. But the virus inside him finds a way through this meme, quite unintentionally. Purposeful meme trojans are not an ethical practice. It hinders an open meme culture. Either we can equip ourselves to detect and omit them from the virality or the creator should have the conscious and ethics to understand the trojans that assist his/her memes intentionally or unintentionally.
A new type of warfare emerges. that is memetic warfare.

മീമുകള്‍ എന്നത് ചെറിയ ചെറിയ വിവരശകലങ്ങള്‍ ആണ്. നമ്മള്‍ മൂളി നടക്കുന്ന ഒരു പാട്ടിന്റെ ഈണമോ ഒരു പെയിന്റിങ്ങോ ഒരു വാര്‍ത്തയോ ഒരു ഉദ്ധരണിയോ കവിതയുടെ വരികളോ ഒക്കെ ആകാം. പക്ഷെ പൊതുവേ മീം എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റില്‍ കാണുന്ന പടങ്ങളെ ആണ്. പടങ്ങളും അതില്‍ ഒരു എഴുത്തും കൂടി കാണും (ഇമേജ് മാക്രോ എന്നാണ് സാങ്കേതിക പദം). ട്രോളുകള്‍ എന്നും പറയുന്നു. ഇത്തരം മീമുകള്‍ ചേര്‍ന്ന് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന ഈ അന്തരീക്ഷം ആണ് മീം സ്ഫിയര്‍. ചെറിയ വചനങ്ങള്‍ മുതല്‍ വലിയ ഇതിഹാസങ്ങള്‍ വരെ മീമുകള്‍ ആകാം. മീമുകള്‍ മനസ്സുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് മനസ്സുകളിലേക്ക് പകര്‍ത്തപ്പെട്ട് പോകാന്‍ കഴിവുള്ളവയാണ്. രസകരമായ ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റ് ട്രോളുകള്‍ക്ക് ഈ പ്രത്യേകത പ്രകടമായും ഉള്ളതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ബിംബാത്മകമായി അവയെ മീമുകള്‍ എന്നുതന്നെ പറയുന്നത്. അവ 'വൈറല്‍' ആകുന്നു.
എവിടെയെല്ലാം വ്യവഹാരങ്ങള്‍ നടക്കുന്നോ അവിടെയെല്ലാം ചൂഷണത്തിനുള്ള സാധ്യതകളും ഉണ്ട്. അതുപോലെ തന്നെ ഇവിടെയും. ആശയവ്യവഹാരങ്ങള്‍ നടക്കുന്നു. മനസ്സുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് മനസ്സുകളിലേക്ക് ഉള്ള മീമുകളുടെ തേര്‍വാഴ്ചയില്‍ അവര്‍ കടന്നുപോകുന്ന മനസ്സുകളെ ബാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ആശയങ്ങള്‍, വിശ്വാസങ്ങള്‍, ധാര്‍മികത, സ്വഭാവം എന്നിങ്ങനെ എല്ലാത്തിനെയും ബാധിക്കുന്നു. റിച്ചാര്‍ഡ് ഡോക്കിന്‍സിന്റെ വൈറസസ് ഓഫ് ദ മൈന്‍ഡ് ¹ എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തില്‍ മതവിശ്വാസം ഒരു വൈറസ്സുപോലെ മനസ്സുകളെ ബാധിക്കുന്നതിനെപ്പറ്റി പ്രതിപാദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഒരു കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍വൈറസിനോടാണ് ഇവയെ ഉപമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ പ്രതിഭാസത്തിനെ വൈറസുകള്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന സാംക്രമികരോഗത്തോടും. ഈ മേഖലയെ സാംക്രമികരോഗവിജ്ഞാനീയം ആയി വിളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. വിവര-സാംക്രമികരോഗവിജ്ഞാനീയം (ഇന്‍ഫര്‍മേഷന്‍ എപിഡെമിയോളജി).
ഇവിടെ, മീമറ്റിക്സിലെ തന്നെ ട്രോജന്‍ ആക്രമണങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി നമുക്ക് ചര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യാം. ഈ ട്രോജന്‍-ആക്രമണ തന്ത്രം പ്രയോഗിക്കുന്ന രീതികളൊക്കെ വളരെ ഉദ്വഗജനകം ആണ്. ഒരു ട്രോജന്‍ കുതിരയുടെ അകത്ത് ഒളിച്ചിരുന്ന് പടയാളികള്‍ കോട്ടയ്ക്കത്ത് കടക്കുന്നതുപോലെ മീമുകളെ ഒരു മീമിന്റെ അകത്ത് വേറൊന്നിനെ ഒളിപ്പിച്ച് മനസ്സുകളിലേക്ക് കടത്തി വിന്യസിക്കുന്നു. ഈ മീമറ്റിക് ട്രോജന്‍ കുതിരകള്‍ വലിയ പ്രതിരോധമൊന്നും നേരിടേണ്ടിവരാതെ തന്നെ മനസ്സുകളിലേക്ക് കടക്കും. കാരണം ഈ പുറം മീമുകള്‍ എന്നത് ഇരയാകുന്നവനില്‍ അംഗീകാരം ഉള്ള മീമുകള്‍ ആണ്. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അവന്‍ ആഗ്രഹിച്ച് അവന്‍തന്നെ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് കണ്ടെടുക്കുന്ന മീമുകള്‍ ആണ്. ശരിക്കും ഉള്ള ഭീഷണം ഇതിന്റെ അകത്ത് ഒളിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട മറ്റേ മീം ആണ്. അവ പ്രതിരോധ ദുര്‍ഗങ്ങള്‍ ഒക്കെ സുഗമമായി കടന്ന് ലക്ഷ്യത്തില്‍ എത്തിച്ചേര്‍ന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. പ്രതിബന്ധങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയിലൂടെ അവ നുഴഞ്ഞുകയറുന്നു. ഇനി അവര്‍ അവരുടെ വിക്രിയകള്‍ തുടങ്ങുകയായി. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അടുത്ത കുപ്പിണികളും കൂടി എത്തിച്ചേരാനായി അവര്‍ കാത്തുനില്‍ക്കുന്നു.
ഈ ആക്രമണം എല്ലായിടത്തും ഉണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ എടുത്തു പറയാനായി നമുക്ക് സോഷ്യല്‍ മീഡിയായിലെ പോസ്റ്റുകളെ പരിഗണിക്കാം. ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റും സോഷ്യല്‍മീഡിയയും ആണ് മീമുകളുടെ പുത്തന്‍ വിളനിലം. ഒരു പക്ഷപാതിയായ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അന്ധമായി/തീവ്രമായി ആശയങ്ങളെ പിന്തുടരുന്ന ഒരാളുടെ പോസ്റ്റുകളില്‍ നിന്ന് ഇത് വ്യക്തമായി മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ പറ്റും. അയാള്‍ ഇപ്പോഴുള്ള ഏതെങ്കിലും ചൂടുള്ള കണ്ടംപൊരി വാര്‍ത്ത എടുക്കും. എന്നിട്ട് അയാളുടെതന്നെ വാക്കുകളില്‍ അതിനെ പങ്കുവയ്ക്കും. പക്ഷെ അതിന്റെ ഇടയില്‍കൂടി അയാളുടെ ആശയസംഹിതകളും രാഷ്ട്രീയവും കൂടി പതുക്കെ തിരുകി കയറ്റും. ഇതിനെപ്പറ്റി ബോധ്യമുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് കാണുമ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ ഇതിനെ മനസ്സിലാകും. പക്ഷെ പ്രതിരോധ സങ്കേതങ്ങള്‍ വികസിച്ചുവന്നിട്ടില്ലാത്ത മനസ്സുകള്‍ പിടിയിലാകുന്നു. വൈറസ് അവരെ പിടികൂടുന്നു.
ഒരു ട്രോജനെ ഉണ്ടാക്കിവിടാന്‍ എളുപ്പമാണ്. ഒരു കണ്ടംപൊരി വാര്‍ത്ത എടുക്കുക. എന്നിട്ട് അതില്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പടര്‍ത്തേണ്ടതായ കുതന്ത്രാംശങ്ങളെ, മാല്‍മീമുകളെ കയറ്റിവിടുക. ഒരു മാല്‍വെയര്‍പോലെ. അത്യാവശ്യം വാക്കുകളെ എടുത്തിട്ട് കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യാനും ആശയങ്ങളെ ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചെഴുതാനും കഴിവുണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ ഒന്നിനെ പടച്ച് ഇറക്കാവുന്നതേയുള്ളൂ. ഒരുപാട് ആളുകള്‍ മനപ്പൂര്‍വ്വം ഇത്തരം മീമുകള്‍ ഇറക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അവരുടെ ആദര്‍ശങ്ങളെയോ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തെയോ പടര്‍ത്താന്‍ വേണ്ടിയാണിത്. പക്ഷെ ചിലപ്പോഴൊക്കെ മനപ്പൂര്‍വ്വമല്ലാതെയും ഇത് സംഭവിക്കാം. എഴുതുന്നയാള്‍, അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ മീം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ആള്‍ നൈസര്‍ഗികമായി തന്റെ മീമുകളെ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നു. പക്ഷെ അയാളുടെ ഉള്ളിലും പറ്റിക്കൂടിയിരിക്കുന്ന വൈറസ് ഈ മീമുകളിലൂടെ പുറത്തേക്ക് കടക്കുന്നു, സോദ്ദേശപരമായല്ലാതെ തന്നെ. മനപ്പൂര്‍വ്വം ട്രോജനുകളെ ഇറക്കുന്നത് എഴുതുന്ന ആളിന്റെ അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ മീമറുടെ നൈതികതയ്ക്ക് ചേര്‍ന്നതല്ല. അത് സ്വതന്ത്രമായ ഒരു മീം സംസ്കാരത്തിന് തടസ്സം ചെയ്യും. ഒന്നുകില്‍ നമുക്ക് എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും ഇതിനെപ്പറ്റി ബോധ്യമുള്ളവരായി മാറാം. അതുവഴി ഇതിനെ അവഗണിച്ച് സാംക്രമികത ഇല്ലാതാക്കാം. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ എഴുതുന്ന ആള്‍ സോദ്ദേശപരമായോ അല്ലാതെയോ ഉള്ള ഇത്തരം പ്രയോഗങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി ബോധമുള്ളവരായിരിക്കുകയും അത് പ്രയോഗിക്കാതിരിക്കാനുള്ള നൈതികത ഉള്ളവരായിരിക്കുകയും വേണം.
