So I decided to start growing microgreens for many reasons:
1: I'd like to eventually grow them to sell for business purposes and have a small farm
2: I'd like to grow an adequate supply to eat them myself as they are very high in nutrients
3: I feel they are very sustainable, require very little water and grow VERY QUICKLY!
This is my first attempt at growing them so please bear with me. I kept a log so you can view my progress.
Here, I will be growing mung bean microgreens, from the standard edible beans that we usually cook with.
25/11
Soaked 50g mung beans in water 14:00
26/11*
Rinsed, drained and refilled. Checked on mung beans and noticed many sprouting 8:15
Rinsed, drained and refilled with fresh water 15.30 more sprouts emerging
27/11
Rinsed and planted 12:00
28/11
Checked, no water needed, sprouting ok
29/11
Checked, no water needed, sprouting well now (see pic)
30/11
Checked and finely misted with water, seemed to maintain moisture though. more sprouts and longer, some small leaves too. Don't seem of remained in the soil, maybe topsoil needed for future? See pic
1/12
Checked and realized I should uncover, there appears to be some small bugs, (aphids I think) but not too many to concern me too much. What looks like mold has appeared in 1 section, but I'm not sure if it is mold, it doesn't have an odor it may just be the growing stuff see pic. I will try to let dry a little to aid the mold situation. Uncovered and let exposed to the sun.
2/12
Checked and misted finely. Leaves green now and doing very well. Mold doing ok, not gotten worse or maybe even gone. Keeping an eye.
3/12
Checked and doing well, more growth and greener leaves. Finely misted. All is well. See pic
5/12
Checked and realized ready for harvest (the majority anyway) so cut most, left others to grow longer. After cutting, I watered finely with a mist and left to grow further. See pics of the pre-cut, post cut and cut yield.
See also a picture of the harvested mung bean microgreens along with some sunflower microgreens.
Now although this yield wasn't as successful as I'd hoped, it was my first time growing, with no prior knowledge of growing plants, let alone microgreens. I am sure in time I will get better and better and hopefully be able to grow commercially. I hope you have enjoyed my log.
