Yesterday tickets to Spider-Man: No Way Home went on sale online and all of the major tickets sites crashed or created a digital line to purchase tickets. I don't think I've heard about such hysteria around ticket sales since Avengers: Endgame. However, there is no way that this movie will make two billion dollars as it would have under normal circumstances. China basically stopped screening Hollywood movies in a major capacity and a lot of places in Europe are going into a lockdown since we have a new COVID variant coming up.
However, movies can still make a lot of money just in the U.S. and with only a little help from overseas and I think Spider-Man: No Way Home will be a record breaking movie. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings made 224 million dollars in the U.S. which is the highest grossing movie in the U.S. since the pandemic started, but Spider-Man: No Way Home should make at least double that amount to make it to a billion worldwide. But there is a chance. A really big opening weekend which seems very likely, like say over 100 million dollars just the opening weekend and long legs could do the trick. Such news make think that movies will be back on track someday soon. Or at least Marvel movies will be back on track because all of their movies have underperformed so far. But it looks like Spider-Man: No Way Home will create some box office history, at least for the pandemic.
