Some local news today, as gaming-website Gamekings.nl started to give users a chance to earn their premium subscription by using the in-browser mining of Monero.
PirateBay
A few weeks ago, we reported on the PirateBay, as they were doing basically the same, just without the explicit consent of their users. Gamekings.nl decided to do the same, but on a more decent way, and not by stealth. By offering this service to all their viewers.
Premium Subscription
For the last couple of years the team at Gamekings have been looking for ways to generate income of the content they create. In the last couple of decades all revenue streams were being generated by advertisements, but that stream was drying up rapidly. A premium subscription was launched, similar to Patreon, giving premium members access to more content, and to battle the ever increasing amount of ad-blocker usage, and the falling advertisement revenue.
Monero
In the most recent step to look for alternative ways of income, they introduced the option to mine your premium subscription, by allowing them to mine Monero in the background. Users themselves can decide for how long and when this mining takes place, or if they would rather just pay for their subscription.
Crypto Exposure
I really support these kinds of initiatives, because although I don't think it will work for most users, steps like this introduce enormous amounts of new people to cryptocurrency as a whole, and not only the end-users, but also the platform itself will continue to promote both crypto's and inform their users about them. A video item on mining is rumored to be in the works, introducing even more people to bitcoin and all of its brothers and sisters.
