Star Trek Beyond began its domestic box office voyage yesterday with a $22.5 million Friday gross, which includes $5.5m in Thursday previews. The Paramount/Viacom release, produced by Paramount, Skydance Entertainment, and Bad Robot, is the third entry in the rebooted Star Trek franchise and the thirteenth Star Trek movie since 1979. The $185m production (cheaper than the $190m Star Trek into Darkness) reunites the core cast (Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, and Anton Yelchin) and pits them against Idris Elba on an unfamiliar alien planet. Like a lot of debuts this summer, this one is big, one of the biggest of the season, without necessarily being a home run.
