Escuela Catolica means Catholic school. At some point, this has been a school, a venue for religious teachings, meetings, and a dormitory for those children who are from the upland area of the town. Built in 1940 and it showcases asymmetrical architecture. This building sits right next to Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio de Maria Parish Church.
At a distance is a watchtower. El Gran Baluarte, the largest extant Spanish Watchtower in the country, t was built in 1808 as the main fortress on the church complex. When Moro raids, it served as the command center of Fr. Bermejo to elaborate defense on the Visayan seas.
Here's Kubota Electric Generator. With its help, the people of Boljoon experienced their first use of electricity. It is a three-cylinder diesel engine with 50 horsepower generator managed by the local electric cooperative. It operated from 6 PM to 6 AM daily until 1971.
Tisa or roof tiles are seen as well at the side of the Esculea Catolica building.
How to get to Escuela Catolica and the rest of the church complex?
- From Cebu City, take a jeepney or a taxi to South Bus Terminal
- Ceres buses are available any time of the day which is bound to the southern part of Cebu
Notice that there are signage on the bus front to distinguish which bus goes to where. - It takes around three hours to reach Boljoon
- Inform the driver to drop you at Boljoon church.
