A microwave is an electromagnetic wave of about 2.4 GHz. It is very similar to the radiation used in mobile devices to transmit information, but it has a much larger power.
Water molecules have a dipole moment and can interact with electromagnetic radiation. Basically the electromagnetic wave does move the atoms and they therefore heat up - the wave is absorbed. One often reads that it is a resonant excitation of the molecules: that is wrong (). The frequency for resonant excitation would be much higher, and that frequency would only interact with the surface of an object and would not penetrate the object. The 2.4 GHz is selected to let the radiation penetrate the objects for a few centimetre, which is more efficient to heat up larger objects.
So non of the following you should ever try:
If you put in metallic objects in a microwave you’ll induce large electric currents in that objects. If the objects are small, they’ll heat up a lot, depending on their resistance. If they are big, this will be like a short circuit for the microwave oven and may cause the fuse to blow.
Many other effects are related to heating up things from the inside. Heating up frozen bread loaf with full power might cause it to burn in the inside: that is totally disgusting! Bread is a very poor heat conductor and the surface dries up, so the maximum heat will be a centimetre inside where the bread is burned - while it still looks nice from the outside.
Eggs do explode reliably - but I haven’t heard any good explanation why. A friend of mine even managed to heat up the raw egg, remove it from the microwave intact, and make it explode by hitting it with a spoon. If you try that: make sure you have plenty of time to clean up and a shower nearby.
A cool thing to do is putting soap in a microwave. It slowly turns into a dry foam that eventually fills the whole microwave. I never tried - only saw a video about it.
