DC is looking for a director or a producer to lead Man of Steel 2. At first there were talks that we will be doing a Red Son movie adaptation directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Apparently, Mark Miller was trying to get this project going, but alas at comic con we found out that it is going nowhere and Jordan Vogt-Roberts is no longer associated with the project. I think that Red Son is also off the table. Elseworld stories are just not friendly to mainstream moviegoers.
What is not off the table is a Man of Steel sequel. While promoting Kingsman: The Golden Circle Matthew Vaughn said:
"I am planning another Kingsman, I've written the treatment and some of the scenes. I don't know what I'm going to do next but I have had chats about Superman, I love Superman." (source: movieweb)
Matthew Vaughn is a different kind of director than anyone DC has worked with before. He directed: Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service. He is both experienced in the blockbuster arena and knows how to avoid glum feeling, while dealing with heavy materials. DC could also be interested in him as a producer as he usually both directs and producers all of his movies. Although he did produce some extra movies such as Eddie the Eagle (that’s an amazingly uplifting movie) and the terrible Fantastic Four, but we can forgive him that one glitch in his resume.
After the latest Justice League trailer, it seems that DC wants to bring Superman back to his roots, as a character meant to inspire, not be an indifferent god. A director/producer who loves the character and has great experience with action movies and superhero movies and loves the character is the best way to do that.
Let’s hope these talks will lead to an actual deal.
