Bad Brains - I
When I first discovered punk and hardcore

in high school, I was obsessed with Minor Threat, and listened to their discography over and over until the CD literally wouldn't play anymore. I would also read through various interviews online, many of which were scans of old zines, and found that the members of the band consistently mentioned Bad Brains as a major influence, and one of the most important band's of the D.C. hardcore scene of the time, so I went and downloaded some tunes, and found myself an instant fan. The group was formed in 1977, with the 'classic' line-up consisting of H.R. on vocals, Dr. Know on guitar, Daryl Jennifer on bass, and Earl Hudson on drums. The group was originally formed under the name Mind Power, with the intent of being a jazz-fusion band, but after discovering UK punk music, veered away from the jazz world and became a punk band. They always stood apart from other bands of the time because of their incredible musicianship and songwriting abilities, fast tempos, and wildly energetic live shows, which inspired countless other young musicians to form their own hardcore bands. The band's debut self-titled album was released in 1982, and was made up of a number of songs the band had been perfecting over the previous 5 years. It's hard for me to pick a favorite from the album, as its such a classic that really every song is amazing, but this would arguably be my choice, if forced to do so.
