@slobberchops created this challenge to find some songs from that decade that his daughter @dismayedworld might like.
The sixties were a very creative time for music. The fifties brought us rock and roll, mostly from black artists such as Chuck Berry, as well as the beginnings of pop with artists like Buddy Holly. Up until then popular music was largely about showtunes, crooners and comedy songs. I'm not a music historian, but I've seen my share of documentaries. I'll share a few songs that came to mind. They may not be the best of the decade, but they give a flavour of what was going on. I think we can take The Beatles for granted. Everyone should know their work already. I was thinking of various bands, but found that many of them started in 1970 or later.
David Bowie - Love You Till Tuesday (1967)
Can be the same man who brought us Ziggy Stardust a few years later? I recently read Paul Morley's Bowie book that covers his whole career. In the his early days he was quite conventional and very poppy. We'll gloss over The Laughing Gnome, although I have a soft spot for it.
John Mayall's Bluebreakers - Steppin' Out (1967)
This is more like it. A lot of young white British people discovered American blues at a time when it was a mostly black genre in the US. John Mayall was one of the main propontents of this and a number of great musicians came through his band, including a young Eric Clapton who became a star in his own right.

Pink Floyd - See Emily Play (1967)
Pink Floyd started off as a blues band, but soon joined the psychedelic movement with extravagant performances. Original leader Syd Barrett write some wonderfully quirky songs and may have influenced Bowie. Unfortunately Syd overdid the drugs and lost his way.
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man (1969)
I'm surprised @slobberchops didn't include this. King Crimson incorporated jazz, classical and other styles to create something new. This performance was supporting The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park. Apparently it left the audience stunned.
The Who - Pinball Wizard (1969)
The Who took pop to new extremes. Pete Townshend is an amazing songwriter and they had the great voice of Roger Daltrey. Their songs seem pretty unique compared with a lot of what was going on at the time.
Led Zeppelin - Communication Breakdown (1969)
Some of you will know I'm a big Led Zep fan. They helped to create the whole genre of heavy rock/metal. This is from their debut album. I think the late sixties were such a creative time and sowed the seeds for many of the musical genres we know so well. The seventies were more my era, but a lot of it came from a few years earlier.
