Why is awareness for victims more important than those with the disorder?
I have set Personality Disorder Awareness up to make victims of people with those disorders aware of what to look out for, what to expect and if needed help on how to get out of relationships with people who are narcissistic, histrionic, Borderline Personality Disorder or people who are sociopathic.
All too often the victims of abusive relationships are overlooked when somebody has been diagnosed with a personality disorder, as the person diagnosed often feels they can use this as a "get out of jail free" card to justify their behaviour. Worse still there are many people who will stand up for them and justify it on their behalves. All too often there are people who feel trapped in abusive relationships with people diagnosed with such disorders because they believe themselves to be doing the right thing and supporting a partner who has an illness.
Abuse Is Abuse - Don't Be Fooled By The Disorder
The fact of the matter is that it is quite within the control of the person with the personality disorder to change, and often people who are victims of domestic abuse are dealing with someone with a personality disorder, the only difference is, it hasn't been diagnosed, and it is more common than you would think. So why is one considered unacceptable behaviour where the advice is "get out" of the relationship, whilst a diagnosis suggests these people are simply ill and you should stand by them? The fact is you shouldn't.
