Yesterday I posted how cattle used in an effective way can improve desertic areas back to its glory with a good management if you want to know more check out the link:

Today we look into farming. Some permaculture projects implemented in the deserted areas of our world are fighting back deserts, and winning while creating an economic return to the people living in the areas.
In 1995, John D. Liu filmed the Loess-plateau in China. He witnessed a local population who turned an area of almost the same size as The Netherlands from a dry, exhausted wasteland into one green oasis. The local people were able to reverse the desert by planting perineal weeds, creating space to store water and limiting the constant and exhausting grazing of domestic animals on the slopes of the plateau. This megalomaniac project was able to reverse the desertification of the plateau and now the region is one of the most fertile in China!

In Egypt, back in 1977, Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish founded SEKEM, experimenting to green the desert at Cairo. In 2014, SEKEM has grown to be the leading supplier of ecological products in Egypt and far beyond. Dr. Abouleish has built not only a flourishing business in the desert but helped the community with schools, medical and cultural facilities. A better proof that greening and social innovation can succeed in the desert and both go hand in hand.
This company focus on creating top soil over the desert with small plants that can survive among the sands, after 3 years there is enough top soil to start planting better fruits and vegetables, slowly regenerating the desert!
With over 40 years they prove permaculture and sustainable farming are the best way to re-green the desert! check out the website:

As you can see there is hope for many vast areas of the planet and when good practices and people come together, only good things can be generated! If you have the time I will leave below an awesome documentary that is a must watch! :)
Peace, Carlos
