This time you as community picked the hedgehog genus Erinaceus for me to introduce. Since there seem to be two very similar species of this genus present in Austria, I decided to focus on the genus, because I do not have the necessary experience to differentiate between those two species.

Dieses mal habt ihr als Gemeinschaft die Igel Gattung Erinaceus für mich zum vorstellen herausgepickt. Da es scheinbar zwei sehr ähnliche Arten dieser Gattung in Österreich gibt, entschied ich mich den Fokus auf die Gattung zu richten, weil ich nicht die notwendige Erfahrung habe um diese zwei Arten von einander zu unterscheiden.

The distribution of this genus ranges from Europe to Asia. With 2 species (Erinaceus europaeus and Erinaceus roumanicus) occuring in Europe and 2 species (Erinaceus concolor and Erinaceus amurensis) occuring in Asia.	Die Verbreitung dieser Gattung reicht von Europa bis nach Asien. Mit 2 Arten (Erinaceus europaeus und Erinaceus roumanicus) die in Europa vorkommen und 2 Arten (Erinaceus concolor und Erinaceus amurensis) die in Asien vorkommen.
The two species (Erinaceus europaeus and Erinaceus roumanicus) that are present in Europe co-occur in some areas in Austria and are hard to differentiate.	Die zwei Arten (Erinaceus europaeus und Erinaceus roumanicus) die in Europa vorhanden sind, kommen in manchen Gegenden in Österreich gemeinsam vor und sind schwer voneinander zu unterscheiden.
As a synanthrop genus they live not only in their natural habitats (like scrublands, forests and meadows), but also in parks and gardens.	Als Kulturfolger lebt diese Gattung nicht nur in ihren natürlichen Habitaten (wie Buschland, Wälder und Wiesen), sondern auch in Parks und Gärten.
Like all hedgehogs, species of the genus Erinaceus also have keratin spines that they use as a defense mechanism. The body size ranges from 20-30 cm and they can weigh between 400-1200 g.	Wie alle Igeln, haben Arten der Gattung Erinaceus auch Keratin Stacheln die sie als Verteidigungsmechanismus verwenden. Die Körpergröße reicht von 20-30 cm und sie können zwischen 400-1200 g wiegen.
Erinaceus species are nocturnal and feed on many different small vertebrates and invertebrates as well as fruits, vegetables and fungi.	Erinaceus Arten sind nachtaktiv und fressen viele verschiedene kleine Wirbeltiere und wirbellose Tiere, sowie auch Früchte, Gemüse und Pilze.
All species are able to hibernate and during that phase they can lower their body temperature almost as low as the environmental temperature. The gestation period of Erinaceus is between 30-40 day and one female gives birth to 2-10 offsprings. The average lifespan is around 3-4 years, but in some cases they can live up to 10 years.	Alle Arten sind fähig zu überwintern und während dieser Phase können sie ihre Körpertemperatur fast soweit wie die Umgebungstemperatur senken. Die Schwangerschaft von Erinaceus dauert zwischen 30-40 Tage und ein Weibchen gebiert zwischen 2-10 Junge. Die durchschnittliche Lebenserwartung liegt um die 3-4 Jahre, kann aber in manchen Fällen bis zu 10 Jahre sein.
In general, all 4 species are considered to be more or less common and widespread. Therefore, they are currently not threatened and have stable populations. Only for some species and in some areas collusions with cars can be a threat, but this should not lead to any population decline.	Generell werden alle 4 Arten als mehr oder weniger häufig und weit verbreitet betrachtet. Deshalb sind sie zurzeit nicht gefährdet und weißen stabile Populationen auf. Nur für ein paar Arten und in manchen Gebieten, können Kollisionen mit Autos eine Gefahr darstellen, aber das sollte zu keinem Rückgang in den Populationen führen.
