It is some people's desire to get up close and personal with some of the largest animals ever to live on this planet. Some people in fact what to have this experience while kayaking. Don't get me wrong, it is amazing and it takes watching these animals to another level with no engine noise from vessels and you are literally at water level with these giants.
Some of my work whilst in Antarctica is to be the kayak support vessel, which is kind of being a glorified babysitter. This role consists of watching over the kayakers, whom do have their own highly experienced kayak guides leading them. My role is more looking for animals in the area that they might want to see and also keep any aggressive animals (leopard seals) away from them. For me, it does give me the opportunity to take photos of the adventurous kayakers experiencing Antarctica their way.
Nothing can really sum up the size of these animals like having a double kayak next to a humpback whale surfacing close by. This lovely couple got the surprise of their life as this monster surfaced beside them without warning. Now, they have a nice little picture to go with that memory.
