European Union (EU) countries have signed an agreement to free up frequencies to be used for 5G services for the next 20 years, a bloc's attempt to follow the steps of the United States and China in launching related products with the Internet, writes Telegraph.
ETNO lobbying group, part of which are Orange, Telefonica and Telecom Italia, have criticized the deal saying it is not ambitious and a 25-year agenda was needed.
The interim agreement came after months of quarrels among EU governments seeking to maintain a profitable source of income and telecommunications providers seeking new ways to increase profits.
Under the agreement, 5G will be available throughout the bloc by 2020, with a guaranteed spectrum for a minimum of 20 years.
